Pat Martin, MP. Winnipeg Center

His private members bill C-248 (An Act respecting Louis Riel)

Pat, what the heck are you and this country coming too.
Why must we re-write history? He was tried for High Treason, Convicted and sentenced to hang by the neck until dead. Why don't we just make another bill, saying that the French won the French/English war in Canada. Or how about we change history to show Hitler was a nice guy and that we were in the wrong to Invade Normandy.

Right and Stephen Harper supports it so he is a whore too to the voter . Suggest you need to find out who has signed on to over turn this goverment bs of the past.

The whole Louis Riel era was politics at it's best. Even as an elected official he wasn't allowed to take his seat. The government at the time 'rewrote' laws as they see fit. as they seen fit. as they would in the future tense see fit. seeing to fit their agenda(s).

Its not rewriting history per se.... its not like they are going to say we did not convict him and kill him. They are going to say he was wrongfully convicted so we are going to remove that conviction.

HOWEVER.. it sure will be fricked up having two Louis Reil days in one year.

Hey, if Harper had made this announcement I might be inclined to call him on it as well. But this is Pat Martin.

Pat Martin is a spotlight whore. Whether he is pandering to the minority voter or sticking his nose in where it does not belong. All he is interested in is the next sound bite or photo op.

You really do need to separate the issues Pav. My post was not about minority voters or Riel. It was about Pat Martin.

Sorry to me soundeed like you were saying it was wrong to clear his name , Reil . You are right about Pat but no other MP like Toews would touch it for fear of backlash I quess . This is long over due and should have happened by now .

Riel was tried and hung for treason. sh1t happens. The fact that part of our history includes violent revolt and martyrs is nothing different from many other countries.

If this goes thorugh, I'm quite sure that someone will sue the government for compensation based on his wrongful conviction.

Facts are facts, he was involved with the rebellion( as a leader), he was responsible for a prisoner's death.

Will we clear Cliford Olson's name.
Will we clear Paul Bernardo's name because it was Holmoka who was the murderer?

Probably not but then they were murders , the real facts have started to come out in the last 10 or 15 years and it is starting to look like some of the case against him , was at best not completely true . Besides we would not be in this province if not for him many people have died to get this country off the ground , some of them were liars and cheats . Riel did what most of you talk about, formed a goverment .

Nah, Pav. We'd be in this province. Most of us anywho. If not Riel then someone else would have blazed a trail.

In any event the man is recognized with statues and museums and even a holiday is name in his honour. I'd say the people of Manitoba are showing him his due respect.
