Pay them off. Unless whatever they do with the land must pass the same zoning and other regulatory requirements everybody else must follow. Since I have zero faith in that, pay them off.

Unbelievable.

This issue will drag on and on and on for years to come. And yet another prime piece of land in Winnipeg ripe for residential or commercial development is not developed because a bunch of moronic people can't stop whining and complaining about how it's rightfully theirs to begin with. And yes I agree, pay them off and shut them up once and for all, at least where this issue is concerned.

To destroy Charleswood, and advance the North End across the entire city.

Start the whole process over, consult with the bands. Tell them that the land will be auctioned off to the highest bidder. Maybe the people of tuxedo can buy up some property in West Kildonan, tear down the old small homes and move their mansions over.

The Feds will appeal this to a smarter higher court I'm sure.

This is just the first phase of the battle.

Nothing yet...but it's early in the 'negotiations'.

I wonder if the feds would be as determined if this land was in West Kildonan. Smile

let us all not forget that whilst this is in limbo, Evey single one of those homes, occupied or not is still being heated and maintained, paid for by the feds.

I am very disappointed with this ruling. This is one of the darkest days in Winnipeg history. And I'm going to quote Sputnik from SSP as his sentiments are the same as mine, plus I don't want to get caught for plagiarism ahh frick! Icon_smile

"Seriously. This is absolutely terrible. I cant stand how the Canadian
government has basically given the aboriginal people that ability to
walk all over Canadians and demand that they get whatever they want on
the backs of non-native people. This is racism and political correct
pandering at its finest.

Enough is enough. No more land. No more money. If they want either of these things they will have to pay for it on your own.

This is getting ridiculous.

So now instead of a nice community like Garrison Woods/Green in Calgary
or the community of Griesbach in Edmonton, Winnipeg gets an indian
reserve that will have most likely a bunch of run down and neglected
homes, a gas bar and a casino. The city of Winnipeg does not need
another North End.

Thanks feds."

True, also, I understand that the feds don't pay taxes, but rather a grant in lieu of taxes to cover services, so theres probably a shitload of tax revenue that the City is missing out on.

If there was ever a time for the powerful NIMBY's of Winnipeg to voice their oppositions against a project, NOW IS THE BEST TIME TO DO SO!!!!!!!!!!
I don't believe that the residents of this area are going to stand for a native reserve in that particular area, and I don't blame them one bit. I hope they fight this thing tooth and nail and win, otherwise this area is going to turn into a dump in the middle of an upscale neighborhood.

See the trouble with that statement is that it does not even acurately reflect the reasons why this is happening.

Any sane person reading the TLE can see that this land in no way falls under the guidelines set out.

However regardless of what the LAW says and regardless of what is found at a higher court level. Because one judge agreed with them, even if they loose, any development in that area will forever be the site of major protests.

The judge ruled that the Feds didn't talk to the natives first. Toews is on record as saying that the Feds did in fact do so.

This is just the first round, so chilax I say.

Making it into an Indian Reserve is far from a done deal. Far.

yup they asked them more then a few times. And there was never a response.

Doesn;t matter if its a reserve or not it wont be at least another 5 years before we see this being developed now.

damn assclowns.

If they appeal, the court may hurry because of the conditions, but one never knows with the courts, especially the Supreme Court, where this would go, I reckon.

If they do make it into an urban reserve then there goes the neighborhood! Property values will plummet. I still think we should get rid of Indian affairs, give them a lump sum of money and send them on their way. They will either sink or swim, my money would be on sink.

I would dare say that this is what the majority of Canadians would want, with the entire minority being the aboriginals themselves. They our hard earned money wouldn't be going to support other people, who for the most part, refuse to assimilate into Canadian society. Unfortunately, this will not happen in our lifetimes, if ever.

If an urban reserve goes through, one of two things may happen:

1. Property values in tuxedo and river heights plummet, mass exodus, and Winnipeg gets another north end.
2. Residents thrive on cheap goods and services. Natives become the slave labour of the Upper class. Classism and racism abound like never before.

I believe natives are already Slaves. Slaves to poverty. By giving them handouts we effectively enslave their race and prevent them from fully assimilating into Canada. The cycle is so far along now that they may never be able to break those bonds which hold them.
