I could park there, walk back home, and save time from looking for a parking space near my place... (well, almost).

Hell I don't know what the chiefs' role is. But they are claiming the casino is intended to create hundreds of jobs for their people. As Pavolo say's: $9/hour jobs.

BTW Welcome to our sandbox holly...

I have to agree with Grumpy's comments, why can't they generate money in any other way except casinos? It saddens me that gambling has become such a driving force, its simply a tax on the poor because the one who can least afford it are the ones gambling. When Chief Terry Nelson wanted a full fledged casino at Roseau River my brother and I attended one of the town hall meetings. Terry was giving this long winded speech about what the profits would be used for, he said he wanted his people to be self sufficient again so they could live as proudly as their forefathers again. As Terry said this a reporter from the Altona Echo spoke out loudly " And did your forefathers play the slots and deal blackjack?" That was it for Terry's speech.

Agreed if the goverment gave them the means to do other things on the reserves then it would work remember An Individual cannot own property in the reserve . Only the band and if you start a business you are endangering the bands funding if located on reserve . Hence the need for Urban reserves but the track history here is pretty sad for those .

They should just abolish the "reserves" entirely.

Enough of that bull.

Shut them all down...declare all these natives "Canadian Citizens", and let them start paying taxes along with everyone else. Then the government can go in and clean up the drug houses, the band leaders now become mayors and politicians who actually have to answer to the voters.

After a hundred years of this crap...they should finally just say "that's enough".

Anyone who doesn't want to be a Canadian Citizen from the reserves...can be given their own land somewhere...no money, no military, no police, no food handouts...they can have their own "country" without interference from the Canadian government or assistance from them either.

Maybe they could be given...mmmm...Saskatchewan. Very Happy

Unfortunately, Manitoba is the province with the largest aboriginal population, and along with that the most vocal crackpot band leaders, ala Terry Nelson.

They'll want Manitoba first as a test grounds for aboriginal dominance in Canada, and then they'll go from there.

The casinos are short term gain. Who do you think is spending their money at them? Are all the rich folk in East St Paul, Tuxedo and River Heights driving up to Brokenhead to spend an enjoyable afternoon? Definitely not. Visit either of our 2 monstrosities in Winnipeg and you'll see that the atmosphere is nothing like the commercials want you to believe. Theres a lot of grocery money going into those slots. You know why they call it gambling? Cause if they called it losing, nobody would play.

The chiefs, as far as I understand, are elected or appointed by the people to lead them, just as our elected officials are. So it seems to me that it is encumbent on them to create an environment for economical development. Nine dollar an hour jobs doesn't cut it. Yes, the service and retail industry exists, but thats a spin off to real economical development. Why is it all the lefties complain about "Mcjobs", but fine it perfectly acceptable to create them when their disguised as economical development for First Nations?

Now now. Dozens of new $9/hour jobs will save Manitoba reserves. We are all so bloody negative.

Nah just let Quebec separate from the rest of the country with the small piece of land they came into confederation with in 1867 and give the balance of what is left over to the natives to fight over. Large enough piece that all would be able to fit on it.Maybe then they will realize that they need to work for themselves and not expect hand outs.

That little peice of land was occupied by the natives to begin with they might be willing to fight over it or for it . The province of Quebec that is .

How much do carpenters make an hour? Plumbers? Electricians? You settle for $9 and hour. I think I'd strive for more. Settle? You think it is okay to settle for 3rd rate? Nah, not for me.

My eyes are wide open.
