There is a ton of truth to that.

I remember the people in Calgary moving to Airdrie and Okotoks to save $20,000 on their mortgages and then gas went to $1.40/L.

JTF wrote:Exactly....15 minutes. Already you can see the difference.

If I forget something I need, I can easily walk to Safeway. Living in Anola, it's a drive. Services are limited and the commute adds upver time. imo.

At least that was my personal experience from living in a bedroom community outside of Calgary some years ago.

Agreed. Living close to amenities is more important than most people realize. My wife and I HATE having to drive more than 5 minutes to pick up a jug of milk or package of diapers.

When we moved back to Winnipeg we didn't care as much in terms of what kind of house we live in, but rather positioning ourself within walking distance of a supermarket, a bus stop, an elementary school, a gym and walking paths.

The style of house doesn't affect my lifestyle as much as the amenities (or lack thereof) around me.

I lived in Bragg Creek, and, believe it or not, I sometimes stayed in a hotel rather than drive back home.

The other thing that I noticed at the time, the kids around B C were little devils....nothing for them to do so they got into mischief all the time.

Have you given any consideration to the Osborne Village area? It has all of the above and more. Just say'n.

Goth_Chic- there is a house in Charleswood listed at $249,000 for a 1000 sq fr bungalow, that has a 50'x327' lot- same as living in a forrest. That sounds pretty good to me, who been spoiled on Wellington Crescent on our 300' yard.
When we sell, we are stipulating that DeanK can visit 3 times per season to lay down naked on the grass, or partly naked, and he doesn't have to empty the leaves from the eaves! lol

Amenities mean nothing if you plan things right.
There's a reason places like Costco do well when urban sprawl is happening...it's because people now buy in bulk and shop once every two weeks instead of daily like they used to.

Me personally, I'd rather live 40 minutes to an hour outside the city and learn to plan and budget.

Plus...money would actually be SAVED doing it that way, because there'd be less temptation for that 'last second' run to the store for something you don't really need anyway.

The ONLY downside I can see for GC would be the kids. As they get older they'll want to participate in more things (sports, music, etc.), and those will require further travel distances. But those can be planned as well.

Kudos to GC and her plans to get out of the hustle...speaking of "hobby" farms...any idea what you want to raise?
Have you considered Alpacas? They can be an phenomenal investment if done correctly...and not much space required for a profitable venture.

We are looking more in Anola which isn't far from the city...15 minutes isn't far. I want horses for sure....we are still discussing this whole idea of moving.

umm.. when we lived on the farm we would only buy bread by the case and meat was purchased by the quarter or half animal. other then some milk products and some fresh fruit there would be weeks go by without us setting foot in a store.

yes...and that's the life most farmers were used to.

But for the non-farmer...ie. those in the city...they would shop "daily".

Why do you think there's so many neighbourhood "corner stores" around?

It's because "mom" would go down and pickup whatever's needed for the meals that day or the next.
The larger stores were "ventures" where people would go once a month...to get clothes, bulky items, etc.

But urban sprawl means the stores get farther away (temporarily). So people run to Costco or WalMart and "Stock Up"...so they buy everything they need for a week, or two.

As the stores catch up with the sprawl...that weekly run becomes more frequent...because it's only 5 minutes to the store instead of 15-30.

ahh you mean live in the city folk.... yeah... well you know what, IF I have a neighborhood butcher/grocery store that was actually within a decent walking distance I probably would walk there every day to talk to the guy, buy my meat for the night, provided of course that prices were competitive.

I have a mall that is in "relative" walking distance that includes a butcher and a baker and a bank and credit union etc... Convenient as hell. But these kind of local malls are not that common.

We will consider almost every area as long as the house has access to the amenities we are looking for.

That works well for farmers because they live at work.

However for people that have a daily commute and activities other than sitting in front of the TV every night it requires a HELL of a lot of driving.

If you are a hermit and the only time you leave your house is for work and groceries. Sure it can be planned. However if you go to the gym, church, friends houses, the dentist or doctor, kids swimming lessons, soccer practice, music lessons etc. it can really add up. Wouldn't you rather have all of those things within a short drive or walk?

I also happen to like having neighbours. Living on an acreage can be very lonely for those that are a bit more social.

My suggestion is to hang out with people that living the country and ask them what kind of stuff they do on a weekly basis and see if it lines up with your idea of a well balanced lifestyle.

and this is why different people prefer different types of living Wink.

Me? I HATE neighbours.

If I hear a noise outside, I want to know that I should be heading out with my shotgun ready to hit the idiot trying to steal something...not that it's my neighbour walking between our houses.

I like walking around naked with the blinds open...not to show off...but to allow the natural light in. I shouldn't have to think about the neighbours kids peeking in the window.

I like the idea of walking a couple of miles on a dirt trail or down a road, without having to worry that some stupid teen-gang is waiting behind the next house.

I like the freedom of building a nice bonfire in the backyard...and having friends over to enjoy the night air...without worrying about the ashes blowing onto my neighbours car.

But again, it's not for everyone. It's a lifestyle change...not just a place to live. The same could be said for someone moving "downtown"...just different choices to make.

Ultimately...it comes down to what each individual comfort level is.
