It appears that the charity is doing the wrong thing here, imho. (It should not have handled it this way, obviously, or there would be no bad publicity over it.)

The wiring is a serious situation that could have killed somebody and should not be characterized as a small, innocuous incident. The way the kid is being treated can result in some punitive damages here, imo.

Bad behaviour should never be rewarded, and that is what would happen if this was swept under the carpet.

What bad behaviour do you refer to?

If the charity dude did indeed say what he said, without provocation, then sure smack him upside his head. But don't pay them a cent just because he was rude...

Punitive damages are rarely awarded by Canadian courts. In the case of the bad behaviour of the guy at the charity, had it been me, I would have been pleasant and conciliatory up to the point he mentioned money and law suits and the conversation would have ended abruptly. Thats not just a personal response, but a professional one. the moment I hung up, details of the incident and phone call would have been sent to the Board of Directors and the insurance company.

Does this: ""His exact words were 'We have insurance, do what you have to do,'" = a little more than rude?

Seriously JTF? Or is there more that I've not seen/heard?

I just got a different feeling when I read the story. To me it was...frick off dude...we've got insurance.

Just the mention of having insurance smacks of bad judgement and very bad negotiations skills.

Imo, they should dump the jerk that talked to the dad and make a settlement. They should then sue their electrical ontractor.

It very likely was frick off dude we have insurance. But I'm willing to bet dude was very belligerent and demanding compensation. Trouble is we all will never really know how that call went down unless it was recorded.

Now about suing the contractor or the charity... Does anyone even know how the child was electrocuted? Was the receptacle defective? Did the kid stick something in there? Were wires sticking out? Did some hopped up punk vandalize the plug earlier that day? Did the charity even know there was a problem?

If it was an outdoor receptacle, downtown, I'm surprised it was even energized...

As the saying goes, there are 3 sides to every story, yours, mine and the truth. This is only one side. Buddy is trying to gain some public sympathy by going to the media. If he is convinced he has a case, just file a statement of claim and go for it.
Does the charity own the building, or do they rent? Is the parking lot their responsibility? Sure would like to hear exactly what was said in that phone call before I make any judgement on the level of rudeness.

Well of course it comes off that way, when Rusnak is telling the story!

It seems to me the volunteer was telling him to sue if he wants to... if that's what he wants to do, how is that rude?

My question is, does the Heart and Stroke foundation own and maintain there own facilities, or do they have a landlord which provides the facilities and maintenance thereof. I suspect there is another party at fault here.

I believe the wiring should be vandal-proof and, according to the story ?, there were wires sticking out...a lure for kids to touch.

Hey...stuff happens...but it's the way that you handle things after they happen that counts imho, and the charity dude wasn't very charitable in all this....tsk tsk tsk...they should pay extra for the irony aspect.

If irony was a money maker, I would be rich by now, but such is not the case.

I cant count on my hands the number of times I have been electrocuted by 120 volt.. all I can say is thank god for breakers.

hehehe. ... the most fun was this one campertrailerthingy we had.. if you connected it to power using a two prong instead of a three prong ( or some sort of combination like that ) the metal step and metal door knob basically became the grounding...

step 1. plug trailer in
step 2. try to get into trailer
step 3.. zzztt

or the funner one. We would plug the trailer in while one of us was inside... heheheheheheh..... then the poor silly bastard who tried coming out totally unaware.... zzzzt

ahh good times.

In the army we used field phones which used a crank that turned the magneto, we told newbies they had to check the phones by putting their fingers on the terminals and turning the crank. That never got old. Laughing
