WINNIPEG — Winnipeg was ranked eleventh among 27 cities on a new list of the best places to live and work in Canada for young professionals.

The "Next Cities" ranking, which was prepared by Wisconsin-based Next Generation Consulting, ranks Canadian cities with populations of more than 100,000.

Victoria topped the list, with Ottawa and Vancouver coming second and third. There were a few surprises, with cities like Kingston (4th), Halifax (5th) and Thunder Bay (13th) ranking ahead of Montreal (16th).

The seven key indexes the cities were ranked on were: earning, learning, vitality, around town, after hours, cost of lifestyle and social capital. A city's ranking is based on its total score in all seven indexes.

"Simply being the cheapest place to live or the city with the most jobs is not a long-term workforce strategy," NGC founder Rebecca Ryan said in a written statement.

"The next generation is very savvy about choosing where they'll live. They look carefully at quality of life factors like how much time they're going to spend in traffic commuting, if they can live near a park or hike-and-bike trail, and whether a city's downtown stays awake after five."

To me, this is another one of those dick measuring contests, and likely poorly executed similar to any biased MacLeans poll on "this city is better than that city". I find it hard to believe that Kingston, Regina and Thunder Bay could be more desirable than Montreal; something is missing here. This is an American study on Canadian cities; take it with a grain of salt.

I've been to Kingston several times. Love that city. Been to Montreal many times also. I like it there but traffic is a b1tch. Been to Regina and Thunder Bay too. Not my first, 2nd or 22nd choice for my future home, but...

But good advice on the grain of salt thing. In fact we ought to apply that logic to all such polls favourable or no...

Subjective polls are so... I dunno.. Subjective?

They used ethnic Chinese and politicians for their polls.

That's why Victoria and Ottawa came first.
They didn't ask anyone from Wellington Cres...

Are you sure this wasn't a Penitentiary poll? Which penitentiary is the greatest place in Canada?

I lived in Kingston for a bit when I was in the army. Its also home of the Royal Military College, so in spite of it being a nice place, too many officers for my liking.

How is Montreal so far down the list? Based on their ranking criteria it should be near the top if not first.

Yeah, maybe they recieved answers to their questions in French and couldn't understand them so they just made it up.
