Mum (band from Iceland) - Oct. 30, Pyramid Cabaret

Mum are a group from Iceland who I find interesting. Here's what Wikipedia says about their sound:

"...whose music is characterized by soft vocals, electronic glitch beats and effects, and a variety of traditional and unconventional instruments."

Tickets are $20.


They are not unlike Sigur Ros.

An unconventional band from Iceland? Inconceivable!

Did the Sugarcubes play at the old Spectrum once? I remember they had posters for the band up in the bar for a long time..

WOW! Unbelievable show!

I can't recall the last time the pleasure center of my brain was stimulated so much by pretty much everything a band played. Mum blew me away and I think I will remember this show for the rest of my life. They were more an indie-pop band than an ambient group. Their songs were both musically complex and catchy, at the same time. If Celine Dion and Nickelback are the poison, Mum is the cure. This was their first time in Winnipeg and the crowd grew from 50 to probably over 200. Mum's cello player and singer was the first opening band. Her solo music is atmospheric, not unlike movie soundtrack ambience. The applause for her esoteric set was polite but not great. I was sold, however, on her music.

The second warm up band was another quirky one from Iceland. I can't recall their name, but they were entertaining and sounded unconventional.

Here's how someone described Mum: "An Icelandic outfit whose live sets see them beautifully meshing some dense but intricate programming with gorgeous vocals and richly textured melodies."

As soon as the encore was finished, I made a bee line for the merch table and snapped up their last three CDs as well as the cello player's solo disc. The encore tune was goregous...like having a shower of bliss. The seven-piece band have two three lead singers, who also play ukulele, recorders, harmonicas, mouth accordions, keyboards, bass, guitars, trumpet, drums and other assorted instruments. I'll see them again in a heartbeat. This show was way more interesting to me than even the recent Metallica concert.

A "shower of bliss"? Hmmm. I guess I should google them.

They are better live than on CD, inmo. Try youtube. Your mileage may vary.

See that lovely young gal, fourth from the left? I, she and another girl and another boy did some music together back in the day, about a decade ago or so.

When I heard that Múm was coming to Winnipeg, I didn't know she had joined then, otherwise I would have messaged her earlier, but it was too late... by the time she received my message they were already going somewhere else.

Small world, eh? And a very, very small country... Iceland, that is.
