News just reported that Terry Nelson did not qualify to proceed with his bid to become Grand Chief to replace Fontaine because he did not receive the required 15% of the vote. Guess we're stuck with the a$$hole.

Best news I heard all day. This fool is dangerous. His latest? Suggesting the three northern territories leave Canada to join the US. His reason? To shake things up. Get some attention.

Why is this dude even elected as a chief? He is a tool of the highest order. A dangerous tool indeed.

Actually, I'm at the point of considering him comic relief. I mean, is this the best that the Roseau River community can do?

Nelson - a blight on the First nations community....zero credibility.

I hope we the new National Chief can work with the Feds towards the goal of shutting down untenable reserves and securing training for people who need it.

It's embarrassing that people are being born and raised apart from society at large. First Nations people need to integrate into society more than ever. They need leadership who understands this and will work towards it. What they don't need are kooks like Nelson.

Isn't that one of the bone of contentions? Aren't the leaders fighting "assimiliation" as they consider it cultural genocide? I don't understand how or why they would not want to fully participate in society and the economy.

I'm not speaking for Aboriginal people, but I just don't personally know any who want to live the traditional way. All the ones I know want to be just like anyone else, ie. get an education, start a career, have a family, etc.

There is pride in talking about preserving the "traditional ways" of living, but it's really an ego-defence mechanism used because most Aboriginal people are behind the rest of society when it comes to education & training, career development and thus quality of life. The young people will hoop dance to please the elders but they want to get off of the rez and improve their quality of life. The sooner their leaders stop trying to appease the older folks and think about the future, the better off they will be. They can start by telling their people to start a family after getting their education and to pursue healthy lifestyles.

Maybe they say this already, who knows?

The elders are still held with respect for their view which is a good thing, but adjustments can be made to it . Yes you are right and there are many who feel what you do , just as there are many who have a bone to pick. Some of those bones we as the landlord created and put there .

Don't include me in your "we". I am not a landlord. Maybe you consider yourself to be, which is a real problem.

And neither am I a landlord nor an invader or conqueror or whitey or whatever.....I am just me, trying to get by in trying times and still manage to laugh at life's curveballs and I have not killed anybody - yet. Smile

Many years ago my brother and I went to a Roeau River townhall meeting when Terry was first trying to bring in a casino to generate revenue.A few small town news reporters were listening to Terry's longwinded gambling spiel when at one point Terry said "this gambling revenue will help us return to the traditional ways, the ways of our forefathers", one of the news reporters piped up and said " And did your forefathers play slots and deal blackjack too?" Suddenly Terry's speech ended abruptly......everyone in the room had a case of the giggles and guffaws.
