Hi all

I am wondering,

Is shopping at the duty free actually cheaper for booze and cigars then shopping at a regular liquor store? How much cheaper?

I did some quick looking and never really saw any big differences comparing the two so any help would be appreciated.

depends on where you shop...and what you're buying.

And what the rules are on duty.

Some friends of mine buy tons of liquor & beer while in the US at stores...they find stuff on sale...and then pay the duty on overage..and it's still cheaper than buying at the duty free.

then generally...yes, it's cheaper...than buying in ND or MN where you pay sales tax on top of cost

than DE? where there's no sales tax...it might be a wash...but then you have to pay to go to DE

so only Sales tax? so like on 20 at 5% we are talking like a buck?

So... looking for a sale is probably much better then like you say, since
1) I am not really caring about the brand.
2) The selection in the Duty free sucks from what I can tell

Thanks AA appreciate the advice on Alcohol.

I would check what the state tax is, because I bet you it's ony 2-3%, and that buying in a store in Minneapolis you would have a much better selection. Those 6.99 for 5 Swisher sweets, or 7.09 for Black & Mild at 7.07/5 - the duty free won't have those cheapies. I wonder if there is an import tax that would be passed on to you at the drugstore that you wouldn't be charged at the Duty free?
Do you have access to what the duty free is carrying at what price, and then you could phone a liqupr store to compare?

Depends on which duty free too.

I bought those swisher sweets at the duty free in Michigan on one of my trucking runs (several years ago). I don't smoke...but my daughter was due two weeks later and figured I should have some kind of cigars on hand.

Different Duty Free shops have their own selection. The one at Emerson is actually kinda crappy compared to the ones east.

If you want a good one...try the one at Buffalo, NY.

They even have prize draws throughout each day handing out bottles of liquor at NO CHARGE!!!

And they have samples running all day.

Other prizes handed out include perfumes, watches, jewelry.

It's quite the place...and a HUGE selection of everything.
