The public is not responding to the Liberals or Conservatives. Both parties are useless. We need a new one. The NDP deserve to be in second or third place.

NDP will rule until they run into the same thing that killed the Filmon Tories -- decreased transfer payments from the feds. Probably about 2 years from now you will likely see transfer payments getting hacked and slashed. Whoever is in charge at the federal level will have no choice but to do it to get Cdn finances back on track.

It's pretty tough for the other parties to make much ground these days. MB has been doing reasonably well lately.

We need to keep going with large federal bailout, err I mean transfer packages. That is the key to a strong economic future. Suspect

Gee, that doesn't boast very well for Manitoba; a very poor mindset for not wanting to escape the "have not" status as a province.

Ummm, what exactly are you saying EdWin?

What cherenkov is saying is it will take the loss of transfer dollars to move Manitobans to change their mindset. Manitoban's don't seem to like change much and it will take the change-driving loss of billions to move us.

Few thinkers believe Manitoba is "performing" well because the NDP is doing a good job. When the transfer dollars begin to decrease the NDP will be exposed for the twits they are...

Right, but I don't understand how so many voters still believe that the NDP are responsible for all of the growth that is occuring in the province. That's like people saying all the growth in Alberta is ONLY because of the oil; maybe half or 2/3 of it, but not ALL of it.

Until then, the province of Manitoba along with several other provinces, will see federal transfer payments like crack cocaine; once you start it's very difficult to stop.

Indeed it is. I believe too many have not a clue what drives this province. Others, true NDPers want what we have and make no apologies. Still others are completely ambivalent. That is why we keep reelecting this government.

Only when they feel real pain will they vote to change.

All the more reason to build a party that stands for real change.

Most people have a general sense that things are going well. They see new buildings going up downtown -- Hydro, WRHA, UofW; they hear on TV that the unemployment rate is low; they see Gary Doer smiling on TV all the time. Your Average Joe doesn't have the motivation to dig deeper to see what really going on: that private sector jobs are not growing, that the construction is all government funded, that unemployment is low because labourforce participation is low, etc...

As long as things seem to be OK, then Guy Smilie will continue to be popular. Only when the Feds drop the hammer on transfer payments will things no longer appear to be rosy.

And transfer payments will not drop until we end up with a majority in government.

That's probably right, unfortunately.

Where are private sector jobs growing right now? Of course the construction is government funded. It's called stimulus infrastructure spending and one of the few things a government can directly do to ride out a recession.

"one of the few things a government can directly do to ride out a recession."

the provincial government has been dumping crazy amounts of money into contruction and other areas long before the "recession" hit.

the case can sort of be made that real infrastructure improvements ( roads bridges ) are neccessary expenses. But we are still spending money that is not our to improove them.

The other problem with that spending is it does not build/increase collateral spending. Once it's gone it's gone.

That is why stimulating private sector spending is the way to go. The problem as I see it umcrouc0 is this province has had very very little private sector spending in a very long time. Evil Doer has been promoting public sector spend as a growth engine. It never has been and never will be. Evil Doer is about to find out just how unsustainable it is.

Many people will find out the hard way. It will hurt.

I don't know that I agree that there's been little private sector spending. Not in noticable infrastructure but manufacturing is really where our economic base is and there has been a lot of work in the past few years on plant upgrades for new product lines. And there was a pretty big issue recently with companies not being able to take on more work because of the labour shortage so they needed to turn away bids. From what I've seen there's a pretty solid base with potential to keep growing.

I would say that in comparison with each other, private spending is dwarfed by government spending.

The government doesn't employ that many engineers and techs.

But what they are doing is putting more money into training programs to help manufacturing companies keep up and to help support new contracts. I'm sure if another party was in power they'd do the exact same thing.

We need major expenditures: new companies bring new jobs into the city and province. There has been some for sure, but not as much as we need to balance out the capital expenditures. My point is most government expenditures are not sustainable.

Sort of give a man a fish/teach a man to fish kinda thing.
