personally I think its a little over the top having every single employee listed. But I have no idea what the proper way of choosing who should be listed or not is.

That's pretty nuts. I'm surprised they are allowed to release that.

sorry only people over 50K

its not allowed... its Mandated by law.

crazy.. How is 50K a reasonable cut off? Shouldn't the cut off be some sort of management position or something?

mind you... WOW, does the city ever seem to short change its computer professionals.

Disclosure of the salaries is, I'm just surprised they include everyone's names.

This is disclosure under the provincial Public Sector Compensation Disclosure Act, which requires disclosure by name of those earning over $50,000. This applies to any agency in receipt of public funds (ie CFS, WRHA, etc.)

Great idea to keep things open. All employees know that their earnings are open.
The head lawyer in the litigation department is earning only $174,000. That does not seem like a huge amount to me! probably because it is a girl, that the City is able to underpay her? What do you think MizP?
Most women work pretty cheap because they are so surprised to be employed anywhere, right?

oh you are too funny......I would think that would be a fair salary if one takes benefits into account.....now if she was in the same position in Calgary, Vancouver or Toronto there is a good chance her wages would be commensurate with the COLA as set by those civic governments.

The only women I know who work cheap lack education....the wage gaps are decreasing mind you the glass ceiling is still a problem in some sectors.

Now that sort of wage to me seems excessive given that it does not take a rocket scientist to do those sorts of jobs but because those positions are usually held by males, most labour sector jobs are held by males, they have a union that will go to bat for them to ensure that their status traditionally as main breadwinner is maintained.....I would bet an assistant or clerk, usually a female held position, would not make as much even though she would be expected to have specific skills that required some post secondary training. I cannot quantify this theory but it is one that has held for a long time overall in many countries.

Argue grey matter (clerical roles fer instance) to physical labour. Who should get paid more? Why?

It is a difficult determination to make but traditionally, male labour roles have been rewarded more monies than those of females.....

I don't know a single woman who does the same job as a man, works the same number of hours as a man, and makes less money than a man.
Yes, the average woman makes less, but when you compare men and women in the same job with the same hours worked, they receive the same pay.
If I'm wrong, I'd like to see examples. From Canada.

Right on. No more comparing a secretary to a construction worker, etc. Compare a programmer to a programmer. A graphic artist to a graphic artist, etc.

I know for a fact that women that are plumbers, electricians and painters receive the same compensation as their male counter-parts.

I think the "unfair" arguement is just a left-over from times past when some women were making a business out of the issue.

not from the past... its still an issue for some

specifically comments of.. Why do daycare workers not make as much as truck drivers. Day care workers are mostly female truck drivers are mostly male. Its descrimination!

or the female could just get a job as a truck driver.

Certainly interesting. Constables earn about double the wage of a Health Inspector, that is bizarre.

but do we need to know their names to find that out?

Thank you....that was the point I was trying to make.....if it were not for some women making a fuss wage parity in the trades would not have been achieved let alone getting more women into the trades which have been male-dominated and still are outside of urban areas!

AHHH... sorry, the other site had someone demanding that different jobs get the same pay just because one job was dominated by women and the other by men... specifically the case I pointed out.

Actually...this could be an example you're looking for.

Truck drivers (long distance) typically get paid by the mile traveled (with other pay for layovers, etc.)

Male drivers typically drive about 20-30% more than female drivers...so they do get paid more.

It's not something written into any policy, and it's not that the female drivers make less per mile...it's just pure determination.

And that's an average. I've known female drivers who will run 15 hours straight to make a run, and others who are lucky to fill their 11-hour limit. But MOST the male drivers I know, would drive non-stop from here to TO and some have even run non-stop from here to Montreal (aside from fuel, food, and potty breaks).

I've never known a female driver who would do the same thing.

Add to that the female drivers will typically not touch a load (ie. load or unload), or take the same risks driving in poor weather that male drivers will.

So it could be argued... are they doing the "same" job...if they aren't doing all those things...but yes, technically they are...they just aren't going "above & beyond" the way their male counterparts are.

On the reverse though...female truckers are less likely to have accidents, violations, suspensions, and load damage. They also don't put as much wear on the vehicles (though they tend not to inspect them as well either).

Our construction company hired a female labourer last summer. She was an architectural college student, who wanted to know how the things she's designing actually got built. She was probably one of the best workers we had...and aside from a few physical limitations (like the guys can carry 4 lengths of 2x6 but she can only carry 2 at a time) could do the job just as well (and all that meant was she had to make a couple extra trips). The only downside we had with her...was the first few weeks of her on a site...work seemed to slow down. We assumed it was the "distraction" factor Wink.

I dunno. When I was a kid going to grade school, the message was loud and clear that women could get into any career they wanted. They were not limited to typical female careers like nursing and secretarial. I've never heard anyone say that women couldn't get into the trades but who knows? All I know is that there are no laws outlawing careers that women can get into.

then its not the same job is it?

Are there not laws in place with regards to how many hours one is allowed to drive in one shot?
Because if that is the case then perhaps the female drivers are being more observant of said laws.....just a theory here....I am not up on the latest rules so if anyone out there knows please post.

yes...in Canada, it's 13 hours of driving, 15 hours total work time per day

US - 11 & 15

but there's always ways "around" that in the log books

That said...companies are changing to help reduce offenses. For example Bison transport uses "electronic logs" now. Basically, you turn the truck on and start moving...and a satellite communication tracks you and sends the info back to Bison.

Things like that are putting most the Owner/Operator & smaller companies out of business though.
