specifically comments of.. Why do daycare workers not make as much as truck drivers. Day care workers are mostly female truck drivers are mostly male. Its descrimination!
or the female could just get a job as a truck driver.
Actually...this could be an example you're looking for.
Truck drivers (long distance) typically get paid by the mile traveled (with other pay for layovers, etc.)
Male drivers typically drive about 20-30% more than female drivers...so they do get paid more.
It's not something written into any policy, and it's not that the female drivers make less per mile...it's just pure determination.
And that's an average. I've known female drivers who will run 15 hours straight to make a run, and others who are lucky to fill their 11-hour limit. But MOST the male drivers I know, would drive non-stop from here to TO and some have even run non-stop from here to Montreal (aside from fuel, food, and potty breaks).
I've never known a female driver who would do the same thing.
Add to that the female drivers will typically not touch a load (ie. load or unload), or take the same risks driving in poor weather that male drivers will.
So it could be argued... are they doing the "same" job...if they aren't doing all those things...but yes, technically they are...they just aren't going "above & beyond" the way their male counterparts are.
On the reverse though...female truckers are less likely to have accidents, violations, suspensions, and load damage. They also don't put as much wear on the vehicles (though they tend not to inspect them as well either).
Our construction company hired a female labourer last summer. She was an architectural college student, who wanted to know how the things she's designing actually got built. She was probably one of the best workers we had...and aside from a few physical limitations (like the guys can carry 4 lengths of 2x6 but she can only carry 2 at a time) could do the job just as well (and all that meant was she had to make a couple extra trips). The only downside we had with her...was the first few weeks of her on a site...work seemed to slow down. We assumed it was the "distraction" factor
