Could someone sneak into your home and use a aerosol spray on you?

"
Eight men from the small farming community of Manitoba, Bolivia -- named after the Keystone Province, where the residents' ancestors came from -- were arrested last Monday and charged with drugging and raping at least 60 women and girls as young as 11 years old.
The men, aged 18 to 41, are accused of sneaking into homes, drugging the women using an aerosol spray and sexually assaulting them. The news agency Reuters reported earlier this week that a Bolivian federal prosecutor said the rapes may have been occurring for the past 10 years.
"
The story does not say but I assume these are all single women that were being assaulted? Or women that are at least alone at the time?
I have never been to bolivia and have no idea of the living conditions but how does one sneak into a home without anyone else waking up? What kind of aerosol spray does this sort of thing?

Let us assume that is a small Mennonite farming community whereby they have been left to their own devices for many years by the Bolivian authorities as long as they, the settlers, stay out of the local political arena. In Belize, where I maintain another residence, there are several Mennonite communities, some very modern and others stuck back in the dark ages especially when it comes to abuse of women and girls.

A young Mennonite lady, about 16, was beaten severely by her father when she did not want to enter into an arranged marriage. She escaped, hitched a ride to the nearest Belizean town of size (if you knew this area you would realize that is a feat in and of itself) and overcame her fear of the locals even though she had been born and raised there....she filed a complaint and her father was arrested and tried. This case made shockwaves throughout not just Belize but throughout the Mennonite community. It also alerted social services to the fact that some nasty things had been going on in some of these so-called pious farming settlements.

oh yeah I have no doubt about the stuff that might go on in some of these religous areas... from the article this place was founded by a splinter group of a splinter group that thought manitobas rules and laws were wrong..... I am just wondering about this whole sneak into a house and use a spray thing...seems almost...hmm... planned by more then the perpatrator? like that they somehow must have add accomplises?

Perhaps a little nudge-nudge-wink-wink?

I am thinking along the lines that parents, siblings, relatives of some sort are aware its going to happen and perhaps even in some cases the women themselves might find out its going to happen and the community is so messed up it is somehow an acceptable situation to a good chunk of them.

You know just like "female circumcision" is somehow acceptible in some areas of the world.

Cripes........I'm not at all surprised by this sort of thing, I'm one of those "splinter" Mennonites too, but my folks had the good sense to come back to Canada just before I was born. The church rules overall with an ironfist and tells you what you can and cannot do. And of course if you hold the reins too tight the horse will buck. Many many issues with the Mennonite mafia in Mexico running drugs into Canada and USA, all sorts of problems. Not at all the innocent humble people they project themselves to be.

A little bit more complicated but you are on the right track Dean.....shunning - or to be shunned, is the one thing that one does not want to have happen to them from within their own community. This occurs when there is a perception of being influenced by the outside world, bringing outsiders into what is perceived of as private community affairs or bringing shame to said community by not only questioning events but speaking up so loudly that the outside world hears and thus puts said community under an unwanted microscope.

It is not just the victims who are victimized but those who would wish for heinous activities to cease and desist.

Taht mentality is also why FGM is allowed to occur.....I liken many folks from religious backgrounds to be like Ostriches.....the cartoon ones anyway.

that reference is with regards to old Bugs Bunny cartoons where an ostrich would stick its head in the sand when the sh1t hit the fan. Just like many people are wont to do.

conservative Mennonites here in Manitoba were being pressured by the provincial government on education and other issues during the First World War and one group left the country and set off to establish the community of Manitoba, Mexico, in the mid-1920s.
The problem of course was caused by our provincial government, as noted in the article!

Which party was in power during those days?

I guess we can't blame the NDP for this one...
