Hey all

I have a cough, stuffy nose and feel unwell. Should I stay home from work?? My boss isn't all that understanding when someone is sick even though our HR department sent out a memo stating that if you feel flu like symptoms to stay home. What do you all think?

If you stay home... will your kids stay home too? If so.. not much sense in staying home (unless someone else is there to look after them)

Also...be careful and watch for swine flu eh?

The hubby will be home by 11:30 am so I would get the afternoon to rest.

Also... but time you have started feeling the symptoms.. everyone else at work probably already has it anyway. So staying home just because you are sick really makes very little difference to the spread of it.

Sucks. I think companies should give you at least 6 sick days per year.

Bizarre that you guys have no sick days. I figured employers of choice would have such benefits.

Same where I work. In retaliation, I will go to work even if I'm near death... spread it around a bit! Given my predictably weak immune system, I'm sure they'll reinstate our sick days after a few illnesses make the rounds...

That's actually illegal GC...even in the hospitality industry.

Everyone (even part timers) are entitled to two sick-days per year.

Are the standards different for part-time employees?
No, the amount employees' work does not change their rights. Some of the standards, such as vacation pay and general holiday pay, are based on a percentage of earnings. Therefore part-time employees may not earn as much as full-time, but they are still entitled to the benefit.

The legislation refers to unpaid time off. Paid sick time is a benefit that an employer pays for.

Sorry all...I quoted the wrong GC post Wink.

I wanted to quote this one.

If her employer is telling her she doesn't get sick days because she's part time...that's not true. All employees (part-time or otherwise) are entitled to the same benefits. Some of those things (like holiday time etc.) are determined by number of hours worked...so therefore may be reduced...but are still available.

yeah but there is a huge difference between Days off with and without pay. When I (and I am assuming GC) say we dont get sick leave, it means we dont have specific days that we can call in sick that our employer will still pay us for.

unlike many places which earn that at a rate like .6 days per month and that sick days can get "paid out" if you dont actually get sick.
