Holy sh1t! time for the PUB to go when they make orders like this.

It is not a Utility's job to run social programs. Whats next MTS and Shaw are ordered to give free TV and phone service?

say ... wait just a damn minute

"
Most recently, the PUB said the economic downturn makes a bill-assistance program even more vital. And it noted that Hydro is about to embark on a massive $18-billion dam-building program over the next 15 years that will push up electricity rates.

excuse me? push up electricity rates?

So, comrade, how many times must I pay to subsidize somebody else?

Till the NDP is gone for good , this is one of the more silly Ideas but from a board of NDP cronies why not .

I really dont understand it. If the poor cant afford their bills.. shouldn't the government be stepping up and deciding if it wants to assist them?
How can the PUB be involved in this at all? Is that even in their mandate?

NDP cronies once you become one it is hard to stop acting like one .

true.. very true.

I just finished reading the public utilities board act.

from what I can see. the ACT actually precludes them from making this order
They are only allowed to set "Just and reasonable" rates and standards.

"

Discriminatory rates
82(1) No owner of a public utility shall

(a) make, impose, or exact any unjust or unreasonable, unjustly discriminatory, or unduly preferential, individual or joint rate, commutation rate, mileage, or other special rate, toll, fare, charge, or schedule, for any product or service supplied or rendered by it within the province; "

....Why would Hydro be building a damn in order to "build up electricity rates"??

Sounds a little nefarious to me.... Suspect

We pay for it so rates go up and talk is the subsidy we enjoy with low hydro rates is going to end over the next 5 yrs. The feds and some other provinces are pushing for it as a means to cut our transfers.

I'd probably get some clarification on building a dam to push up rates. It's a vague strangely worded sentence in the Free Press. I've seen enough misunderstanding or misrepresentation of plans or functions of a number of companies in the Free Press lately to take much they say as being accurate.

I believe the push up electricity rates is in reference to the fact that they will need to increase rates to pay for the construction of the dam. I would hope that once the contruction is complete the rates would go back down.. but that is a hope that is founded on moon beems and silver stars.

Yeah, that's kinda like "once the new oil refinery is online, I'd sure hope the price of gasoline drops accordingly".......umm yeah, sure that'll happen!!

Dare to dream tho....dare to dream! lol

Isn't the dam being built to be able to sell more electricity to other areas at a higher rate?

one would think so.

Not if the push to make us pay what the hydro is worth gains steam , As I said the push is there as the province could be much better off if we do .

the province would be much worse off if we paid "regular" rates.

How do you think that .

Because there would be VAST sums of money missing from people pockets.

One of the ways we attract manufacturing companies is by having very low utility rates. We'll be selling most electricity from the new dam to other areas so you'd think it would make sense to just keep doing that at a high rate and keeping local rates low so we can still have a competitive advantage in utilities. If we can sell all this excess at high rates to cover costs I don't see the point in raising ours.

I seem to recall that last year we ended the low rates for all NEW industry
