If universal (free) daycare is made available on the taxpayer dime then I believe demand will grow exponentially. Don't take away its value by making it free. Charge a token user fee. Then it is less likely to be abused by those most likely to abuse it.

My Dad was an executive and made six figures, we lived in a modest home and he didn't drive a brand new car. I worked part time through junior high and high school, paid for my own telephone line. We always had tons of food and nice clothes. He took us to Disneyland when we were in elementary school ( I had a paper route and saved up my own spending money). Times have changed and I realize that, but my children will work for the extras. I will not buy anyone a car at 16. I feel you appreciate things alot more when you have to pay for it.

I feel too many people are caught up in the whole "materialism" trap. I am trying my best to teach my children that there is more to life then having a blackberry or a brand new car.

I didn't have the best upbringing I don't come from a lot of money at all, but my parents when I got my license gave me my first car, when that died, they bought me my second (I am on my 4th car now, which I have paid for). I paid for the insurance and gas for the most part (they helped out). I was allowed to go rent free, BUT the way I learned the value of a dollar was the fact I worked almost full time while in highschool. My parents did not advise me to save, so I blew all my pay cheques on clothes, shoes, purses, whatever I wanted. I can admit that my boyfriend and myself are very materialistic people, we both drive brand new vehicles, love cell phones and brand names. I can gaurentee that my daughter will work to purchase her own things for the most part, but will probably be materialistic in a lot of ways just due to the fact her parents are. It's the generation we live in, and I am part of that generation that wants wants wants, and usually gets gets gets!

Freeman wrote:I agree that stay at home or daycare is a personal choice. This leads the discussion as to who pays for it? Should daycare be a universal program fully funded from taxpayer dollars, or should it be funded by those who make the choice to go out and enjoy the benefits of a second income. There are those who need the assistance (single parents, young moms going to school), but lets talk about the 2 parent family who have made the choice.

I think if you are going to put your kids in daycare you should pay for it yourself, but you should be assessed on your family income.

I do not mind paying for universal health care on the public dime.
Anyone can get sick and health care costs can be a killer.
For example Cancer does not choose between rich and poor.
However I draw the line on universal day care.
Why should people who have made a personnal choice NOT to have children be forced to subsidize someone elses choice to have half a dozen kids?

Love and Hate You have been sold well

This is just what the marketing people love to hear , as well as the banks for it is usually their interest interest interest . No offence to you but their are so many living way beyond their means out there , that the second job is the means to do just that. What is it that makes people think that having is the sign of success I will never understand . It is to bad some have forgotten how to work to get and the principal of do I really need it .

We want to be careful when we state a second job is just for the niceties in life. Some people need the second job to pay their day-to-day expenses, like rent, food, clothing...

Many can afford extras. So what? It is what it is and who the frick am I to challenge anyone's lifestyle decisions. If people want five TVs and three cars and a cabin at the lake good for them if they can afford it.

Why do we feel it is necessary to judge people so?

From some on here um thats a laugh , I do not judge just state that the World of Marketing has sold it to people that they have to have it now . And for many that is why they are in debt to their eyes. Not meaning anyone in particuler.

Who's judging? I agree. If people want to work like mad to have the fancy house, cottage, 3 cars etc then good for them. I choose to live differently. I don't want my kids thinking that those who have more are better then those who don't. That is what I see in today's youth. Judging people but what they have instead of who they are.

I know that principal of do I really need it now that I have a daughter. It's not just about me anymore, it's about my family. So my views have changed from all about me, to all about my family.

As for the debt up to our eyeballs, that is why both of us will be working, both of us are actually in school next year at the same time, so that we both can have well paying jobs without having to work crazy hours. We want whats best for our child, as well as for our family, and I can say that I am not in any debt up to my eyes yet! Let me get school under my belt first!
