Last week I was playing fetch with my dog when she stopped short, yelped and sat down. She would move a couple feet and sit down. This went on most of the evening. The next morning she would not get up at all.

So I immediately took her to the vet. The moment I opened the door at the vet it was like nothing happened. Since the vet could not see her right away I took her back home. She walked about gingerly the next few days and improved to the point she was fetching again.

Then yesterday same thing occurred. She won't even climb a couple steps. I am bringing her back to the vet tonight.

When I check her out (feel her limbs and back) she does not respond as you'd expect (yelp when pain increased).

Any thoughts?

arhtritis or quite possibly a pinched nerve in her back.

She like warm baths?

or a pulled tendon/muscle

my dog did the same thing...ran quick...and then wasn't able to walk for a couple of days.

vet said it was either a pulled tendon/muscle or a dislocated hip...but an x-ray was the only way to tell for sure.

I opted for some pain pills and for my dog to "take it easy" for a few weeks rather than the $1k x-ray estimate.

As it was, the pills were $200.

At any rate...after about 3 weeks, he seemed to recover nicely...still favouring a bit...but now he's quite healthy and back to running (about 6 months later).

Takes time to heal anything...so fetching after only a couple weeks might have been too soon.

Just returned from the vet. After a thorough exam, including an x-ray, nada! He said the remaining exam requires fresh urine. Lucky me, I get to find a way to collect it. The vet said some injuries take a little time to manifest themselves. The vet did not mention arthritis. Toba is not yet three years old. Maybe too young?

So I will watch closely, and not play games for a few weeks. And I declined the pain meds thinking Toba will tell me if the pain is too much. She has never yelped in pain since the first injury. Not even through a very intensive exam this evening.

BTW Vet cost was $154 all in. Where did you take your dog AA that they were going to charge $1000 for an x-ray?

When my cat Jakey caught some sort of lung infection a year or so ago the x-ray cost me 75 bucks. The pills were 30 dollars on top of the x-ray and I think 50 dollars for the exam.......right around your price Grumpy. By the way, you ever try feeding a cat pills?? First I stuck a pill or two in his wet food, he simply ate around the pill, so I crushed it up to a powder in his food, he would not go near his dish.So I ended up taking a syringe full of water, popping the pill in his mouth, followed by a good squirt of water, voila, pill gone and 1 angry cat!

Depending on the size of your dog, baby aspirin works for pain relief. We had a shitzu (sp?) that in his latter years of life tended to have difficulty with pain in his legs and we gave him a 1/2 a baby aspirin for the pain and he seemed to do well, going up and down stairs. It may work for yours, but I would ask the vet first. Hope things work out well for you and your dog.

You have to ask the Vet before you go down if they have taken the U.S. course on how to squeeze every dollar out of owners!
No one would charge $1000 for an X ray, you must have misinderstood. I found that there can be quite a variance in charges for the same thing, so you are better to ask ahead of time. The vets do not mind telling you. My vet in the Tuxedo area obviously had a huge rent differance than the one in the North End or 10 miles out of town.

Makes sense now. They charge outrageous rates for emergency care after hours and weekends. I imagine yours was an emergency. If not find another vet. Tuxedo Animal Clinic is a good vet.

Yeah...and it was after hours.

My vet on Sherbrook doesn't charge much at all...he was just closed at the time.
