Wants to have more or something by time the other museum opens. About time other museums caught on to the fact that in the unlikely event of someone is traveling here to see the HRM they will likely be attending other area museums as well.

But hey, why bother with the fundraising effort to expand.. just wait ten years and move the an empty building at the forks.

Somebody may be dreaming in technicolour if they believe that there is a shade of lipstick that will change this pig's appearance.

They can put out all the bones they want and add all the video screens they can, and I still won't pay $8.50 to see videos and bones (actually replicas of real bones)....but that's just me.

Having said that, I still would take the Manitoba Museum over the Asker Holocaust Memorial anyday.

this is the line that caught me by surprise..

""When the museum opened, the (philosophy) was to keep the good stuff safe and not put too many artifacts out."

Yeah... thats kinda the opposite of smart.. even back when the museum opened.

Long ago, museums were the curators of the (public's) historical artifacts.

Now they have become centers for entertainment and education...at huge public expense btw.

I love the Manitoba Museum, and I would be 100% in favor of it expanding. Unlike the "other" Museum, the Manitoba Museum is an asset to the community.

In the early seventies I remember taking a school field trip to the museum, I had never been there before and to a young kid this was fascinating, I remembered it in great detail. Fast forward to last year when I took my daughter to the museum for the first time.......not a word of a lie, almost everything I remembered from nearly 40 years ago was still there, the buffalo hunting exhibits had not changed, the immigrant exhibits looked exactly the same, etc etc. I know you can't "create" history and put it in the museum but every few years couldn't they freshen things up a bit?

My niece took her son there last year and some exhibits were closed; some were gone; and they charged to get into other exhibits.

So funny to see the exact same comment on both forums.

The Museum has four parts - the traveling exhibit, the main exhibits, the science museum, and the planetarium - and each has an admission fee. There are also package prices. The main exhibits are very extensive and if you were to go through it, reading, looking at everything, participating, etc., it would take you 5-6 hours. They added the Heartlands exhibit recently and have space to expand further. If you look at the Heartlands exhibit, that's more representative of where the museum is heading - more hands-on, kid-focused, learning experience.

JTF is right about the difference between museums now and then. They've changed into educational institutions and that's really the explanation for the need to update and change the way they show their artifacts.

I really love the MB Museum. I think they offer a lot to the community and schools in terms of education and draw a lot of tourism to Manitoba. It's one of the few things in our city that stands out as unique because it focuses on our history.
