for those of you paying attention... Arnie tabled a budget a little while back that needed to be approved by the populace.

They told him... frick you... aint gonna happen you are not taxing us more.

So.. where to cut...
well the cuts came out today
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090527/ap_on_re_us/us_california_budget

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Tuesday proposed eliminating welfare for 500,000 families and terminating health coverage for nearly 1 million children to help close the state's ballooning budget deficit.

Also among the cuts are stops to college fee assistance for thousands of students, fewer vocational training opportunities for state inmates and the elimination of $70 million in funds for the state park system.

Schwarzenegger's previously proposed cuts include laying off 5,000 state government employees and cutting billions of dollars from K-12 schools, potentially shortening the school year by a week.

SWEET JESUS... well at least the poor in California are warm.

What's wrong with the budget cut solutions?
Many of these things we've been suggesting on our forum for months.
Eliminating welfare for 500,000 families? In a state with 20+Million people...you don't think there's 500,000 people bilking the welfare system who deserve to be taken off? And if each family only had 1 kid (though most of them probably have 8 or 9), that 1M children comes up pretty quick.

College fee assistance...with as many grants/programs/loans available for college students, why would the government be handing out money for it anyway?

Screw the inmates...bad enough they cost money to maintain.

State Park System - not sure about this one...and surprising...though it would depend on what that $70M was actually going towards. If it was to sweep the dirt bicycle trails every year...then yeah..that's a waste.

If his previous suggestion of laying off 5000 workers (which is probably a good idea) was turned down...there's probably a good chance these others won't fly anyway.

As I recall though...schools (at least some of them) in California had gone to year-round schooling (ie. no summer calloff). so shortening the length by a week would probably not do too much damage...just save some cooling costs for when the kids aren't in classrooms.

I never said from an accounting persepective it was a bad thing. Just gonna be a generally damn rough ride for the state... and well to be frank the police force budgets will have to be adjsuted accordingly.
