the Gimli Glider was a 767 (not a 747) that diverted to Gimli on July 23, 1983.
Gimli Airport is an active airport (using the east-side runway only - the west side one is used by the raceway and go-karts). The airport hosts the water bombers, Gimli Regional Gliding School (air cadet gliding), a skydive centre, First Nations Transport, and a Interlake International flying school. The military also frequently uses the airport for Search and Rescue drills and navigation exercises.

I think Dean's right. They wanted Russian-looking people as extras for some scenes including a soccer game on the ice outside the sub, or something like that. I remember thinking I should try out for a part.

yeah there was a big add in the paper calling for skinny scruffy looking people to pretend to be russians in an outdoor soccer game.. no idea if it made it into the movie or not though
