I guess the only thing more surprising was that GM did not attempt to rationalize brands sooner.

I'll personally say...meh.

No big deal.

I've owned 3 Pontiacs in my life.
Pontiac LeMans (should've been Pontiac Lemons)
Pontiac TransAm (WAY overhyped)
Pontiac Sunfire (decent car...though VERY small inside)

All three had MAJOR problems almost constantly.

That GM picked Pontiac as one to close...I'm not surprised.

When I was a kid, I liked Trans-Ams, due to the Smokey & The Bandit film. This is one of the cars from the film.

I never quite understood why there was a market for basically the same car with different names, all made by GM.

Yes and yes.

Their business models need to change. Especially now. Build one badge. Do it well. Seems to work for Honda and Toyota.

I'd guess Mercury will be history soon.

Plymouth is already gone.

Dodge/Chrysler are similar...though Dodge focuses on Vans/Trucks and Chrysler focuses on Cars/Vans...probably see a merging there and Dodge going under...though the "Dodge Ram" oxymoron sounds much better than "Chrysler Ram".

At the Ports/Rail yards in Philadelphia...there are typically thousands of cars parked in a lot...with NO markings on them. I was talking with one of the yard workers...apparently they get labeled at the dealers...on whether or not they were a Toyota or a Honda or a Mazda.

Toyota/Lexus? Nissan/Infiniti?

Are these the same parent company, or do they just happen to build dealerships together?

Many years ago, there was no real competition I guess, so they competed with themselves I reckon.
Chevy vs. Pontiac
Olds vs. Buick
Although Pontiac/Buick were considered a bit better I believe.

But anyway, it sure has been a long time coming...the solidification of the brand.

it actually had to do with one company purchasing the other and having to continue on the line. It was not until "recently" that they basically just put the same vehicles out in different lines.
It all stems from the time where people never used to shop for vehicles they would just go buy the same brand over and over.

Brand loyalty, nastalgia ... poor reasons to have duplicate dealerships with duplicate models. Pontiac was marketed as being a little more "sporty" than Chevy, but the cars were essentially identical: Firebird/Camaro, Sunfire(Sunbird)/Cavalier, etc .. Unfortunately the "sporty" part of Pontiac usually ended up being expressed in ugly-ass body-mouldings, lights in the back bumpers, etc... Good riddance. Don't let the dealership door hit you in the bumper on the way out.

I had a Camaro Z 28 one time. It was a basic car with stick-on mouldings and different interior details. Funny actually. Fast as hell, but not too stylish.

I always thought the Rally Sport was the coolest of the Camaros. That model didn't last long though. I have never owned a Chevy or a Pontiac, however the only model car I ever completed was a Pontiac Trans Am, so I do have a small soft spot in my heart for the brand.

No one will miss Sun Chickens and the like.

The new G8 sedan on the other hand is probably the best Pontiac ever sold. It's really just a re badged Holden Commodore so if Pontiac goes it could be sold as a Chevy

The real losers with Pontiac and other GM cuts will be the local dealers and their many employees. That part of the cuts will indeed hit Manitoba.

There was a story yesterday that suggested that Manitoba was probably under-represented by GM. If we can assume that Pontiac customers will be converted to other GM products perhaps the hurt won't be so pronounced.
