ok, someone was criticized for making a 'stereotype' accusation in another thread which brought this to mind.

Is using stereotypes wrong? or is it wrong to simply point them out?

Isn't a stereotype by nature accurate? if it was inaccurate wouldn't it be a prejudice?

Stereotype example: Pregnant women get fat. Is that wrong to say that?

Saying that pregnant women get fat is not a stereotype....now saying "all pregnant women get bitchy and wanna eat dill pickles"? That is a stereotype - not necessarily negative but definitely NOT true in all cases.....

So for a statement to be a stereotype, it must be false for some percentage of the population you're applying it to?

I believe so....almost like deductive reasoning....flawed and at times quite inaccurate....unfortunately all of us engage in the use of stereotypes, deductive reasoning and generalizations....I just did.

In its' simplest form a stereotype typically paints all of a "type" with the same brush. And generally speaking I'd expect you to be wrong to apply a stereotype.

For example, in another forum I've watched with amazement an incredibly arrogant sanctimonious pompous ass run his mouth ad nauseam. But I think it would be incorrect to assume all poopiekats to be incredibly arrogant sanctimonious pompous asses.

The only one who would complain about stereotype's would be the blond or not blond bimboe's on the forum.
