NEver mind all this stuff about job availability, lifestyle, accomodation, and all that, what about important things? Are Icelanders circumcised?

Wink Hehe, no. I've only seen one circumcised penis in my entire life and that one was attached to a Canadian from Alberta in a sauna in Finland.

yeah but those a pretty expensive.. not really worth even 2 months of the extra rent.

Also, I have no need for any of that. I just need a bed below a roof, that's all, really. For the first month I expect to be out of the house almost all of the time, either trying to find work or sitting at a café with a laptop and beer... or both at the same time.

Do most unfurnished apartments come with a bed? That was my point, guys, expensive or not.

I would stay in the hostel for a few days, up to a week. Find an apartment, buy basic furniture, and job hunt.

a futon can be purchased for under $100. ( its a bed and a place to sit!! )

A furnished apartment is about $150 more per month.

or Hell Geek could just wait to move until 2012 so he can go shopping at the brand new IKEA!

Oh, right.

Well, what I'm worried about in the case of hostels is the cost. I've found nothing on the internet below $80 *a day*, which will drain my wallet quite quickly. I imagine that the cheapest of them all don't even have an internet address, but what's the cheapest you've heard of?

But besides, I'm also checking out whether my contacts in Gimli know about someone willing to rent out a room. Actually, that would be the best, just a room at some old lady's or something.

Wow, forget Hostelling International; it's full.

Then I would go with the University of Winnipeg Hostel.

yeah and being right downtown thats a damn good option too... Hell Geek.. go with what Anny suggests. The monthly rate is very cheap, and the advantage of being downtown gives you quick transit access to the entire city.

and apparently you only need to supply your own linen and cookware...

I would get in contact with them to make a booking as soon as you have your flights booked. I'm sure it goes fast. Alternatively, you can kijiji and craigslist for summer sublets. Some students leave Winnipeg for four months over the summer and sublet their furnished apartments in the meantime.

Well, I just talked to my contacts in Gimli and they know of people who just moved there too, who have an extra room! Even if that doesn't work out, the dude can let me sleep in his basement. Smile So now I have a Plan A, Plan B and the university thing as Plan C.

It's starting to look as if nothing can go wrong.

Thanks again to all for the suggestions. Smile

Oh yeah, that's one of the very few things I worry, the bugs in general. In Iceland we only have itsy bitsy tiny little bugs which are more cute than scary. We have mosquitoes but they're small and wimpy and generally don't sting. They came here with humans so we're actively trying to wipe them out... we've gotten rid of 1/3 species of them according to the national nature institution thing.

Nothing makes a brave viking look like a wuss as much as huge bugs which look like space aliens from Denmark. oops

Is it true that you can eat a lot of Vitamin B to reduce the odds of getting stung? I did that in Portugal but I don't know if it worked 'cause I was only there for two weeks. I got stabbed to death anyway. Funny how you never notice until afterwards.

The only insects that you have to worry about are the mosquito's. It seems some years are worse than others. When there is lot's of standing water in the spring you can be sure there will be lot's of mosquito's. Fortunately we've no water this year... Smile

you forgot about the Wasps!!!

this year (as it seems it will be cold & wet) look for mosquitoes...but when it's hot & dry...the wasps come out in DROVES!!!

And they hover about 2" off the ground, so as you walk around in your sandals, they fly under your toes and sting you right between them.

yeah thats because pretty much only the wasps are immune somehow to the malathion they spray to kill the mosquitos

And at the beach there are the Horseflys to worry about... those bite like a sumbitch... in the bush/tall grass there are of course tics (thankfully lyme disease is rare in Manitoba).. the endless supply of annoying ants no matter where you try to sit....then when the noseeums come out.. thats always fun.. bite harder then skeeters and damn near impossible to kill by swatting...pine beetles.. yeah those are fun too... never mind all the regular beetles that are around the provice some as large as 3 inches across... which dont do anything to you.. .but just looking is bad enough.... ooo army worm season and umm canker worms... yeah those are fun times...
