I am having trouble understanding this case
There is a baby who has too slight problems.
1) Liver problems ( whatever that is)
2) She must be on a respirator everytime she goes to sleep.

Because of this the parents want to dontate her heart and other organs to help other babies that need it.

but apparently a glitch has come up.. the baby when taken off the respirator...did not die.
http://www.winnipegsun.com/news/canada/2009/04/08/9052906.html

"She's continued to breath on her own overnight," Wright told reporters outside the hospital. "This is not a failure or a win, we followed the protocol and it is best for both babies at this point.""

HOW THE frick IS THIS NOT A WIN!????????

HELLOOO your baby is ALIVE!!!!... what just because you are going to be inconvienced for the rest of your life you are willing to let her die. HOLY crap talk about BAD parents and BAD doctors for even thinking this is an option.

I don't know the whole story but if this baby is really ill then it would've been better for her/him to die right away as opposed to lingering. I would rather die fast then linger in pain, not saying this baby is in pain but who knows.

the media has only reported the two issues .. liver problems... and neccessity to be on respirator when asleep.

Could there be more? Sure could I guess.. but the baby surviving for an hour when they said for sure she was going to die ... seems to me that means they are wrong and this is a definate WIN.

I don't know where you're reading about liver problems (didn't see it in that link).

As far as the respirator issue.
If she has the full disease, it would basically mean she has to have a respirator for the rest of her life. If she falls asleep without one, she could die.

The disease (as it was explained to me), basically means your brain stops talking to your body when you sleep..so it doesn't tell you to breathe.

I don't know how I'd handle it as a parent...being in constant fear that my kid might fall asleep when I had no respirator available, or when I wasn't aware of it. I know as an adult...if I had that problem and was that much of a burden on someone...I'd say pull the plug and let "nature take its course"...which is what I think the parents here decided.

When the plug was pulled, it seems, something kept the baby breathing...so now I'm sure they are reevaluating the situation.

The "not a failure/not a win" comment, would indicate the baby is not out of the woods yet. She didn't die..so no failure...but they don't know why she lived...and they aren't sure if she will continue to live yet...so not a win either...right now they are back in limbo.

used to be that the pacemaker for the heart did not exist. How far away can a pacemaker for the lungs be?

no no . a simple device that stimulates the muscles that makes you breath is all that is needed. Hell I bet Dr Ho could whip one up over night.

hey guy.. grab a clue... keep your daughter alive....keep the other kid alive too... if you need to use the current "crappy" mechanical ways to do it... then do that and help the research along to come up with new and better ways of keeping them alive for a great life.

Quit trying to make it seem like you are the good guy.

The only one thing that I can see that is certain in this case, is that the doctors were wrong twice.

They said the baby would die if and when taken off the machine, and the recipient baby would die very soon without the transplant.

Both babies are living dispite their pronouncements.

exactly... at what point to the parents stop trusting the obviously inaccurate advice?

yay.. the parents it seems have finally given their head a freakin shake

"We believed the doctors that she was not going to make it. We believed that she was on death's doorstep. That's why we made the decisions that we did," Vitelli said.
"However, now when I look back on it, to be honest, I don't really believe what the doctors are saying and we know in our hearts that's she's a fighter."
Both Vitelli and Wallace said they want to take their daughter home, if possible.
"The point right now is get Kaylee home and get Kaylee out of this hospital," Wallace said. "There was never any issue on our part about a disabled child. We love her no matter what the circumstances."
