It is good for Canadian manufacturers that do most of their business in the US. It might not be so good for manufacturers that buy from the US for value add here in Canada and resale in Canada.

I hope also that Canadian manufacturers that export primarily to the US used this time to revamp their production methods to improve productivity. I hope they also looked for alternate markets and alternate products for sale in Canada.

We can't again be so blase as to make the mistake of putting all of our eggs in that one (US) basket again.

Diversify, improve productivity and seek alternate markets.

It is good for me, job security as my job's primary function is manufacturing agricultural products, which we sell to Germany, USA, Canada. our customers do business in Europe, russia, china, USA and Canada. So, low dollar = good for my job

Mine is the opposite as most of our product is imported so prices may go up for some things, but stores are trying to cut inventory so some sales will happen .

I tend to spend money when I know my job is more secure. Which, I would think is good for you since I shop locally.

Yes but the majority don't feel secure and credit is drying up so people tend not to buy big items as much.

Manitoba has a very solid balanced economy. The reason we have not taken off with the rest of the west is the same reason we will not enter in a free fall.

Manitoba was projected to have the second highest GDP in Canada (I think). No reason to think we won't maintain that lead, just maybe not 2.9%...

Yes but the big manufactures will slow down big time Motorcoach and Flyer , and Palliser as most of what they make go's south.

Don't forget that in recessionary times mass transit grows. That actually bodes well for New Flyer and Motorcoach. Plus, we need to get Canada buying Canadian. The Canadian mass transit market is huge as well.

Palliser is successful in higher end niche furniture market. While the market is not perfect I bet they don't get hurt as bad as others that target the mass market.

While I hear what you are saying, Canada's economy is not as dominated by manufacturing as is the US. There is still a strong global demand for our products: wheat (etc.) and nickel (etc.). Plus we have a litre or two of oil under Western Canada...

Yes but the majority of the busses go south and cities will cut back on those orders if things slow . The oil is going to make us less , but alot will depend on how long and deep it go's.

Is this the same DeFehr company that split from palliser 4 years ago, making case goods? Just laid off 160 and is closing one manufacturing plant in December, because the Canadian dollar had risen so dramatically over the last while?

New Flyer and Motorcoach should merge when it comes to rapid transit projects. They should start from Winnipeg, using the existing rail lines and constructing special narrower railcars enabling them to be used in narrower corridors (one track lines for example), to make them into 2-way lines.
If it works for Winnipeg, think of all the cities that could benefit and think of the profits from the many contracts for complete orders and maintainace parts later. Just my thought, you can't just keep on making 1950's busses forever, we have to look into the future, electric, not oil combustion.

I don't think either of those companies are stuck building 1950's era buses. They are investing in R & D and looking at all kinds of alternates.

Buses, my Italian friend, will be around forever. There really are no serious viable options out there. The difference will be in how they are propelled.

The lower dollar is great for my business too, we partnered with an American firm to break into the USA market, we are quite well known in Canada and Europe so maybe this will all click now. Now if only the Americans weren't in the midst of a recession......

Was this a sudden drop, or was it gradually gliding down all summer without notice?

No...never hit THAT high Smile).

In fact...it was only at par this summer.

The highest it got recently was $1.10, and that was last November.

Our dollar is tied into what OIL, POTASH, and MINERALS are being sold for!

Oil and potash have dropped dramatically and so has our dollar from a high of 1.09 tp 95-99 cents, and down to 82 cents, and in no time at all!!

I was too lazy in paying some $1500 I owed to a U.S. supplier and it is costing me an extra $400 appx this week.

A $1500US bill could have been paid for with $1350~ Canadian a few short months ago. Today it might cost you $1765~ to pay that same bill. Do the math J2F... Very Happy

It's been pretty much at par or below for most of the year. I've done the math btw.
