It would be neat to see how many messages have been sent since.. and how much total traffic (and what was transferred) since the internet's inception.

One thing I do remember... Youtube in the last two years has itself generated more traffic then all of the internet prior to that..

or some sort of comment like that.

I don't know how that could even be tracked, since there are so many providers and organizations involved.

According to what I've read...there is no "one server" that tracks the whole internet.

It may be reasonable to find out how much ARPAnet actually did, since it's demise in 1989...so a block of 20 years for that specific design.

The amount of traffic is actually quite easy to track. (heh.. easy if you use a computer to do the calculations). The main servers are all that is needed and there are not as many of those as one might think.

This probably would have to be some kind of voluntary project agreed to by each service provider and individual person. A small program that tracks traffic types and amounts would be pretty easy to do.
There was another voluntary project out there when people were trying to break the latest encryption...users grouped together in teams and installed a small program on their computers and tried to break the code... with someting like this, i bet you could get a lot of providers to help.
of course, if some people won't, it will just an estimate and that's probably not worth anything.

not sure where you are getting that information from... I think you and I think of a main server as something different then it is.
