While the technology exists at a reasonable cost, what would be the next issue of police using a/v recording? Under what circumstances would recordings be made public? Even though the images would exist, will the public outcry then be that they should be made public?

What if the police went into a titty bar and had to taze an over exuberant patron, and while not involved in the confrontation, DeanK was clearly identifiable in the background, when he told his wife that he was at another CC meeting? What then??

That would never happen.

one of the biggest reasons NOT to use cameras i think is simply that policework is ugly. and 99% of the public seem to get up in arms when they see the slightest bit of force used on any person, regardless of whether its appropriate or not.

too many people would look at the videos of police taking control of drunks, or using their batons, or using OC spray, and yell and scream about how the officers are too rough, too loud, using too much force, not using a polite enough tone, etc. etc. simply because most people dont understand that this is everyday stuff that is necessary to keep a semblence of law and order in society.

having video of all arrests or police confrontations would just create much more uneeded armchair officers with no real idea of the job police do.

But after seeing about a dozen confrontations, people WOULD have a better understanding of the job.

And why would the video be made public anyways?

ahh.... I guess you missed one of my earlier 100 posts on it Smile

the video would only be made available to ANYONE... if a judge approves it for availability. ie a cop cant even look at his own video without approval, nor can his supervisor, nor can the public.

ummm...then funny thing about videos...they ALWAYS become available Smile)

And not always with permission from someone who's "authorized".

and its usually pretty easy to track where a video came from and who broke the law for it to get there.

ah, i see

well in that case then it just becomes an issue of what kind of camera they use, it would have to be very very small and light, since cops carry too much stuff around already.
especially for the tactical teams, the ones that are carrying out the higher risk entries and stuff, they carry all kinds of stuff on them already and i cant see that they would welcome another gadget to worry about.

there is a thread on here somewhere about the one that UK police are trying out... all told it added 1 lb or something?

1 whole lb? I'm surprised it would weight that much.

The camera would not weigh much but you would need to store 8 QUALITY hours of audio/video (2gb+) and battery power to last 8 hours.

You could probably use something pen-sized. It could be done.

the one above works for 12 hours.

Other cops across the planet are already using personal and car based recording devices... makes no sense that most cops in Canada do not.

Note the word QUALITY. You need proper frame rate and good quality images and sound.

yeah on the other thread whichever one it was.. they had a clip of the video and it was just fine and dandy.
