It appears that children born near the end of the Summer season will grow taller than others born in the rest of the year. They say that this is due to the higher absorption of vitamins by their mothers.
So, does this mean that all basketball players were born in August-September?
And all jockeys were born in March???

Well, being born in January, this would explain a lot.

I'll still put my money on genetics.

If that study were to be true, everybody around the equator would be taller than those living elsewhere. That's not the case.

My sons were born in February and they are much taller than their older sister who was born in September. Kind of blows that theory to crap.

My hubby is 5'3 and I am 5'5 and we have 3 kids, son is 5'6 born in Feb, daughter 5'7 born in Jan and youngest daughter is 4'10 born in March so it is mostly genetics with some good food thrown in for good measure. Think about what you feed your children in today's society and how most of the food now is genetically engineered to produce bigger, faster and stronger than when we were kids. And if you have kids who love milk, don't forget that most of the dairy farmers are loading the cows with steroids and hormones to keep them healthy and strong to produce the top quality and get the best price. These hormones and steroids are passed on to us the consumer so that is part of why our children are taller and to some extent fatter than we used to be when we were kids.

You have three children that are 5'6', 5'7' and 4'10" and they are all less than a year old? Very impressive. Blows the theory away eh?

Canadian milk does not have hormones in it.

Hormones in Canadian milk products were not banned until 1999 or there abouts so kids who were born in the 1980's would have had some consumption of rBST milk to some extent. And even though rBST and other subsequent artificial hormones are banned for use in Canada, the possibility of families purchasing meat, fish and poultry from countries other than Canada are great as they are easier to come by and for the most part cheaper to purchase than Canadian products. And there are still states in the US that have not banned the use of rBST in any form. Just because the product says it is made or packaged in Canada does not necessarily mean it was grown in Canada. And rBST is the artificial, synthetic version of real bovine somotrotopin which can be bought, injected and covered up quite easy as it is a naturally occurring product in the animal's body.
I have started to really watch where I by from and make sure that when it is possible I buy local and organic.

Isn't milk bad for you after you've been weaned? Makes you produce too much mucus or something.

Rosie, Drunk no, crazy maybe. The only thing my mother ever told me was on the way to the church was 'you still have time to turn around and run away'. obviously I didn't. And when we married 24+ years ago he was the same height as me but he has shrunk because of the type of work he used to do. Some would say i hit him on the head a few too many times but that has yet to be determined. Beer fest sounds good to me!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just took the "new" NCCP coaching courses and they give you this booklet on Developing Physical Literacy in kids. They don't say anything about growth but they do say,

"Children who are always the oldest in their age-group tend to be bigger, stronger and more skilled than their younger team mates, ..."

From a coaching perspective, I coach U15 girls soccer, and I agree with this statement in a way, because I can see the difference in the girls in terms of their growth spurts and when they are born. An example being one of our girls is born in Jan. and she is a lot bigger than the other girls, in size, muscle mass, and she also has quite a bit more coordination.

It goes on to say,

"Consider for example in 2007 more than 13% of hockey players who were drafted in major junior hockey were born in January and only 4% in December..."

Good thing I was born in January, I was always taller, and more skilled than my brother and sister....oh and better looking. lol!

@l&h, you coach U15 girls. Been there, done that, my life is complete without doing that again. The boys are a lot easier to deal with, just smack on the back of the head and they do what they're told. The girls have a tendency to cry. I remember one game when one of my players came off complaining about the "bitch" on the other team, and when I asked what happened, the response was "Doen't you see how she's done her hair?"

Born in January.... means you are already big/ developed enough when it comes time for that first year of hockey at age 4. Where as the december baby is still 3 in August/September and may not have the proper skill set to even sign up for that first year just yet. There is definately a huge difference even up to 8/9 year olds.
I wonder if this is why that many league in the USA use July 1 as the age division divider?
