...or a prison in the U.S. in a state that has the death penalty.

Why not just release him in the home town of the soldier that was killed in the fire fight he was involved in?

So, closing Guantanmo, will the world be a safer place?

If the US starts assigning basic rights and freedoms required to POWs under international law, then that may result in less hatred towards the US, and by extension other western nations, from middle eastern countries where these prisoners originate, and thus the world will become a safer place.

What rights and freedoms do POW's require under international law? Did Iraq (as an example of a middle east country) extend the protocols required under the Geneva articles to coalition POW's during Desert Storm?

What amazed me most about the article:

Most of the prisoners whose sentence would be the death penalty, are pleading guilty to their charges.

Thats because a good chunk of the prisoners are actual supporters of "the cause" and want to die to get their 40 virgins.

I'd heard the number was 72 virgins.

And I heard that if they see a naked woman, they have to commit suicide.

So let's send the Playboy Bunnies down there for a big party Very Happy.

And they're not really virgins. Allah has his way with them first.

Freeman: I hope we're not using Saddam Hussein as the standard that we are expected to live up to.

No we're not using Saddam Hussein, but I'm still wondering what POW's rights and freedoms are under international law.

Yup, those are the ones I was taught.

So what freedoms are included in the Geneva articles?

Guantanamo may not be the nicest place in the world, but suggesting that its closing will bring less hatred against the US, especially from certain Arab states is nothing but CRAP.

Gitmo did not exist prior to the terrorist attacks of 9/11, Desert Shield and Desert Storm, the attack on the USS Cole, and a multitude of other "attacks" on not only the US, but western countries as well. Yet, there was plenty of hatred before all of that too.

To make the suggestion that the closing of the POW detention centre at Guantanamo Bay will somehow make the world a safer place is a massive inferential leap and is not based on anything real, other than misdirected anti-US, anti-Bush sentiment.

I hope in closing Gitmo, Obama tells his Generals to no longer take prisoners. That would make both sides happy I reckon...or not.

well as we see in Canada not taking a prisoner can lead to murder charges.

Mixed messages coming from Ottawa on the status of the Canadian terrorist. It seems Harper's office wants nothing to do with him. The bureaucrats are weighing their options.

Good for Harper's office. I do not want this punk back in Canada.
