Want to safely store the grandchild's picture s off the hard drive which is better CD or a external hard drive , or the little usb drives you see. Want them to be easy to retrieve if needed and last with very little degeneration over time .

You might want to consider using a free image hosting service, in addition. If you're house burns down, you may lose the photos, but if they are online, you send a link and a password and others can see them.

Do both: online (flickr is good) and a USB drive. You can get 2GB for almost NOTHING these days.

buy yourself one of those electronic photo frames.
Stores a couple hundred pictures I believe and constantly rotates the picture to a timing you set or you use a button to rotate it. So you can have a different photo of the grandchild displayed every day.

BUT CD is better then external hard drive or USB.... Because CDs are not impacted by magnetic shite

But they are prone to "CD/DVD Rot" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CD_rot

The best solution, is all of the above. Multiple backups in multiple formats in multiple locations.

Basically it comes down to how important your data is to you. Surprised

For my own backups, I use a external HDD, as a large repository. And use Microsoft's "Sync Toy" software (free) to sync up all my data. Then, for specific things, I'll make a CD or DVD backup as well.

Personally, I find the USB or SD (memory chip) method works best.

If you have a memory card reader, that might be your best bet.

The determination is what method will be the most retrievable say 10, 25, 50 years from now? Because that's when you'll want to retrieve the information.

It's hard to predict though..just look at Airt's collection from the past 20 years (+).

For quality images though, your best bet is a larger storage system that's digital, like a CD/DVD/Storage Card. And then seal it in a vacuum sealed bag (not vacuum cleaner bag), and lock it up somewhere reasonably safe...and dry.

With Memory Cards reaching 64GB...you can get a couple thousand high-resolution photos and even some video on one chip.

check that your sd cards can be read by your card reader, as I noticed one card was losing it's memory space while in the camera, and wasn't readable on the PC.

As long as you have some kind of backup, by that virtue alone your way ahead of most users in my book!

The worst is when you get a call "yeah, my PC isn't working, and can you get all pictures off of it for me?"

Little known fact...some memory cards cannot store their full capacity on their primary folder. A "sub-folder" must be created to store additional files.

Most cameras will create this file automatically.

Whether your computer can read them...would really be determined by whether you're putting it in the correct slot Wink

USB sticks are questionable on their integrity. I would not recommend using a memory stick for storing info for long periods of time, specially data that is of importance to you.

yeah.. .carry around in your pocket so no matter what computer you are at you can look at the pictures.. sure...
but not as your backup cause those files will be toast very soon.

I'm quite meticulous when it comes to data storage - anything that is on media with a finite shelf life (3.5, 5.25, 8 inch floppies, tape streamer, etc) has been transferred to CDs, DVDs, flash memory (usb drives, sd cards, CF cards, etc).

The original media (tape, floppies, etc) is then put in a climate-controlled environment and accessed periodically (once or twice a year) to make sure it still works. Usually involves cleaning the floppy and tape drives as well.

I'm of the opinion the more backups you make (across different types of media) the better. Hell, I still take my digital pictures and burn actual PhotoCDs...

I'd be crushed if I couldn't play "Phantom Slayer" on my old Coco 3.

The best way to store pictures forever is by etching on stone tablets. Either the image itself, or the 1's and 0's, either way works.

Airt, what was that coco game where you are a pig, and you shoot arrows at wolves floating with balloons?

Worked for the Sumerians!

That'd be "Pooyan", which was a decent port of the old Konami coin-op.
