Soo... I am nto 100% up on all the events in Greece right now... kind of really really crazy times.

One thing struck me as WTF.. though.
http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/breakingnews/Greek_rioters_attack.html

Protesters burned a Crhistmas tree on Dec 8.. then they are now putting garbage on the replacement tree.

While one can easily argue that a Christmas Tree really has no religous significance, one does have to wonder... what if this were some other religion being assualted? What would the world reaction be then?

By doing a bit of searching on this one on Google, the riots in Greece have absolutely nothing to do with religion. It began with the shooting of a teenager in a "troubled" part of Athens and now the students of Greece are protesting in effect because they feel they are not being treated equally. Not sure what they are comparing the equality to but religion was never discussed or mentioned in any of the articles I have read, BBC, New York Times, etc. I think the burning of the Christmas Tree is a statement being made to a government erected symbol that is easily targeted and makes a statement right in front of City Hall.

Statement still stands... what if this were a symbol of some other religion being burned?

Since when has the Christmas Tree become a Christian symbol??????????? I grew up with the manger and the baby Jesus as the symbol of Christmas along with Mary and Joseph. The only reason I can relate a tree is to put presents under and there was no tree in the barn where Jesus was born for the wise men to put their gifts. I think that if it were another time of the year, these students would have found something else to burn in vicinity of City Hall.

These riots in Greece are not ethnically or racially or religiously based, they are socially based, period.

I think many, many peeps equate Christmas trees to Christmas because they are only called Christmas trees on Christmas?

Right or wrong the association is very strong. Period...

Yes it is another merchandising thing to help sell Christmas , along with Santa.

Maybe. I don't think Christmas trees began as retail props.

the christmas tree has long been associated with Christmas in an effort to tramp out other religions that were also prominant near the winter solstace.

But the Christmas Tree itself is not a Christian thing, only associated with a Christian celebration. The riots in Greece have nothing to do with religion.

Dean is (sort of) correct (can't believe I'm agreeing with him Wink).

It actually started as a way of "hiding" being Christian. In societies where the solstice was celebrated...and Christianity was still a "cult", Christians adopted the tree as a way of hiding their religion...but still celebrating it.

As Christianity grew, and started obliterating other religions who disagreed with them, they used the tree more often as a "symbol" at Christmas, to display their beliefs and oppress other religions.

There is controversy to this, and various references which contradict each other...but the generally accepted "history" of the tree is as stated.
