I was reading another article on the same topic that mentioned they canned the bus drivers etc. as well.
So much for the "No Child Left Behind" Policy, eh?

But seriously...what the hell are the parents and kids supposed to do?

The teacher's are all fired. 2/3 of them will be allowed to apply for their jobs back, with a 20% pay cut, and a 60% cut to their benefits.

All is well, they made a reference to World War 2.

1) they are "fired" as of the end of the school year.
2) MAYBE, they dont know. because they are still working on the budget and state law requires them to be notified of the potential. since they dont know whom might be let go.. if any.. they err on side of caution and let them all know

reality is.. its a stupid law that requires this.

nothing more then that.

With a projected deficit of nearly $40 million for the school department....what are ya going to do?

Ouch. Hard decisions.

"Now I know how the United States State Department felt on December 7, 1941."
Yeah. That's a valid comparison. Hyperbole ALWAYS minimizes one's point.

Wasn't there something similar to this at Flyer or MCI, where the union agreement required a considerable notice in the event of layoff, so notice was given, but the company continued to renew and seek out new orders in order to prevent or at least mitigate the layoffs?

That has to be one of the stupidest things said in a long time. I think the guy who said it, might be regretting it shortly. Must have gone to the Michael Moore school of communication.

A couple of funny things here.

1) that they claim the school budget is running in a deficit. I didn't know schools were in the business of making money...don't they ALWAYS run in a deficit

2) it seems more like a union busting campaign (think Wisconsin)...where they get rid of everybody...which means the union can't exist because there's no teachers...so each teacher is taken back individually in the fall. I'd say watch for that to start making news come june/july.

School boards don't run deficits. They are allocated $X operating capital. They spend more than allocated and they run a deficit.

This may well be a first salvo in union busting. It may be nothing more than meeting the collective agreement. By agreement the school board must provide notice by a certain date. Since the board does not know how many jobs must go they provide notice to everyone.

Heavy handed to be sure but they had no choice.

Note that Michigan is also following Wisconsin union busting lead.
