Well number 1 is that the coach is a moron. There are way more ways to do this and not make it as obvious as blowing a 3-2 lead by pulling the goalie.

But...what about the idea behind this? Lose a game to set up who you play against in the playoffs. Is that wrong or sound coaching?

#1 Hockey Manitoba should ban this jackass from ever coaching in the province again!! This has to be the most cowardly, insidious, perverted act that anyone involved in youth sports could commit. Obviously the players knew what was going on. How the hell can they, or that school, feel good about what was done.

Now, remember the discussion about how kids sports have become too competitive. You teach to win, each and every game.

Throw his a$$ out.

I remember years ago, the Winnipeg Goldeyes had to lose their final game to make the playoffs. A win would have eliminate them.
I think it went like this: St Pauls won the 1st Half title. A Winnipeg win would give Thunder Bay the 2nd Half title, however a Winnipeg lost to St Pauls, would give St Pauls the 2nd Half Title as well. Under the playoff format, the team with the best overall record (both halves) would get the 2nd playoff spot (which happend to be Winnipeg). Winnipeg did lose the game.

Ok and this is high school hockey so these kids are old enough to make decision for themselves, hopefully. If they knew what was going on and didn't agree with it, why did they go along with it??? They could have said no, the goalie could have said no and stayed in his crease, continued to play and won the game. Not having been there at the game and only hearing one side, we don't know what the reaction of the players was and/or what other "threats" may have played a part in why the players went along with the the "throwing" of the game.

Just playing devil's advocate here, I agree, the coach should be disciplined.

The team should be disqualified and the coach should be banned.

Agree Holly, the kids should have refused. Perhaps the school board can look inot what these kids are being taught and why they can't make the right decision when the time comes.

Coaches should be suspended and never allowed to coach organized sport again.

"They could have said no, the goalie could have said no and stayed in his crease, continued to play and won the game."

According to one poster on the freep. the goalie was yelling at his coach on the bench and some of the players were really pissed.

Quick retribution...
By KEN WIEBE, WINNIPEG SUN

Given a second life in the Winnipeg High School Hockey League A-Division city championship, the Oak Park Raiders made sure to take full advantage.

With plenty of controversy surrounding their opponent, the Raiders soundly defeated the Westwood Warriors 4-1 on Friday afternoon to advance to Saturday’s semifinal against College Jeanne Sauve.

“There were a lot of emotions and we wanted to keep them under control, focus on the game and not the extra curricular,” said Raiders head coach Joel Nedecky. “It turned into a bit of a circus with everything and there was more on the line than perhaps a normal playoff game. We wanted to relax and play hockey.”

That’s exactly what they did, though there was no denying the fact the Warriors went to great lengths to try and avoid playing the Raiders — who finished first in the regular season with a 19-2-0-1 record but struggled in the first three games of the city championship — served as extra motivation.

“It definitely did. It makes you want to beat them even more,” said Raiders forward Tyler Morwicki.

“It was tough to deal with emotionally, but we had to get around it and put it behind us. This shows a lot of character. If we can get through that, we can accomplish a lot more.”

“We knew we had a second shot,” added Raiders forward Cole Benediktson. “This was good redemption. Karma was on our side.”

The Warriors were without coaches Ryan Butterfield and Jim West, who were suspended for the remainder of the season after their decision to intentionally lose to College Jeanne Sauve on Thursday afternoon in a move that would have eliminated the Raiders from the event.

Instead, the Warriors forfeited their guaranteed spot in the semis to play the Raiders in a tie-breaker game.

It was clear that the emotions of the incident prevented the Warriors from putting forth their best effort.

“We weren’t ready, we weren’t focused,” said captain Brenden Luschinski. “We were worried about the other stuff going on.”

“It’s definitely been rough,” added Warriors forward Josh Kazuk. “We did a good job trying to get past it but we just didn’t do that.”

That's why those coaches should be barred permanently.
