so there was a developer who wanted to put in some Condos... 200 citizens and the 3 councillors on the committee said. NO... standing committee said.. umm too bad we are doing it.. and the public outcry was loud...so now the developer is saying... okay fine I am not doing it then.

so... should the standing committee be able to override the local committee? Should the developer be pissed.... and should the City only be looking at how much revenue ( 400K per year) these projects will bring in.. or should they actually be taking head of what local residents think?

Perhaps that's why some projects get approval....

In years past, it was almost a given that you would get turned down (the local councillors would agree with the citizens) knowing full-well it would be approved at council.

Imo, of course the city is only interested in potential revenue when approving these projecets, but don't ever factor in future costs....can you say urban sprawl and infrastructure deficits?? Smile

I think in this case the developer probably took the opportunity to bail as economic times might make this a bad time to build.

That said, how many large scale apartment developments have been nixed because of nimby-ism in the last one or two years?

By all means Winnipeg let's keep throwing up roadblocks to development. Then we can sit back and whinge about the lack of development. Can you blame developers for not wanting to come to Winnipeg and try to create something?

This attitude pisses me off.

build a bunch of 50 story condos/apartments in Waverly West. Not enough people living their to complain yet. Build like 10 of them. with 8 condos/apartments per floor or about 4000 units total. Averge of 3 people per unit or 12000 people. make sure all of them are connected via walkaways underground at level 25 and level 45.

GOM...not all development is good development though. (see above) And that's an important distiction that has to be made.

I'm not saying it is. But it sure seems like we go out of our way to make developers feel unwelcome here.

Naw. Here, the developers have always wanted to over-develop a site and the city planners have had to fight with city councillors' own special interests.
