http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/breakingnews/East-side_boreal_forest_worth_130M_a_year_study.html

Article puts the east side boreal forest at a value of $130 million a year. As if putting the new Hydro corridor through it would detract much if anything from that figure. Probably even increase the economy for fishing, camping, trapping, as new access roads will be part of it. Plus, add the energy savings of taking the most direct route from the dams to Winnipeg.

Interesting that we've not heard too much about that little scenario of late. Evil Doer must be hoping that we will all forget. Will the recent awarding of the new generating station contract have an impact on this?

Aren't they still looking into running the line under the water?

No, I have it on direct authority from a couple people "in the know" at Hydro, they have abolished that plan.

Abolished it have they? Heh heh. Personally, I'd have abandoned it... jk

Yeah, no sense it keeping a good idea eh? Under water eliminates most of the native's claims and it is less costly than running it down the west side.

yeah, they just never announced it but they have the premiers "grace" now that they actually looked at it.

No...it's actually more costly going underwater.

And maintenance on the line is 10x more expensive...and considering Hydro has a policy to inspect their lines at least once per year....it would require underwater teams just to do inspections annually.

One of the guys I associate with in our business broke down a bunch of the numbers for me (and a few others) explaining why the costs aren't reasonable to go underwater.

Really?

I understand the need to inspect the line once a year does not exist with an underground line.

Something sounds fishy concerning this underwater line eh? Smile

under water lines still need to be inspected ( any yearly maintenance always makes sense) but they do it with remote cameras and only send the dive team down if need be to inspect something.
then again its not like the above ground lines are inspected real well...

Depending on the lines themselves, maintenance inspections can vary greatly.

I suspect they may be comparing apples and carrots here....not looking at the big picture.

I recall reading somewhere that running the line down the west side would still be more expensive than this underwater alternative.

perhaps in terms of energy dissipation, not construction.

yeah alot of the remote lines are simply.. okay... hop on the quad/ sit in the truck and drive at not a slow speed along the line.
Not exactly a good inspection.

I understand proper inspection of these hydro lines is now done in helicopters. That would seem to me to be very pricey.

Someone at the Lake who is attached with Manitoba Hydro told me that it is to expensive for the line to go underground . Hydro are doing what they are told , not what they feel.

Underground or underwater? I understand underground would be uber-pricey.

And who is telling Hydro what to do? Evil Doer? This is a crown corporation and it should operate at an arm's length from Doer and his peons. Or Filmon and his peons. Or whomever is premier and his peons.

Take a look at google maps at Manitoba. You can clearly see the deforestation done in the interlake and way up north passed Grand Rapids. The road and train tracks are nothing, compared to the power line area. Right in Grand Rapids you can see the hydro lines crossing the river.

And? Is there no more fishing, camping, trapping, etc in the interlake? Are the power lines there a terrible blight on the ecosystem there?

I wasn't bashing the idea. No no no no no no.
I was just, by pure coincidence the other day, looking at that strip of land that reminded me of the lines seen on Mars. Very Happy

What is the deal east side or west side?
Weren't the aboriginals complaining and holding up the east side, and then Doer announced the west side and the aboriginals were still complaining?
