how messed up is this.

we have a coworker who just moved here from Alberta

well just being 2.5 months ago.

MPI ( or from the sounds of it her local insurance agent ) refused to give her a MB drivers license.

He said that her Alberta license, while sufficient to prove she was who she said she was.. it was not sufficient to prove she lived in Manitoba at that address. He said she MUST have an official document like a MB health card that shows she lives here.


Her Alberta insurance is set to expire in 17 days.

I checked MPI website and she can use something like a Utility bill as proof among other documents. (although the insurance guy denies that and says it must be MB health)

How do you get a Utility Bill? oh just simply call and dont actually talk to anyone but leave a recorded message saying you are whoever you say you are and they will start billing you.



WTF!?!?!?!?


wait it gets better. She is using the insurance agent that 1 week ago... GAVE HER THE INSURANCE ON HER NEW HOUSE AND HAS all the legal documents about the house, all the lawyer signatures and everything.

And yet he still says nope.

Ahhhh....perhaps she should go to another agent?

That is idiotic. I thought things like this only happened to me. I was assured that my umpteen million mortgage documents from my lawyer plus the old licence and/or even cheques from the bank w/ the new addy should be sufficient. It sounds like MPI is just as douchebaggy as ICBC is in BC.

Yup. Guberment monopolies tend to behave like that...

Just get a local official/professional to sign the guarantor form. They must have known you since birth and witness that you have lived in your home for 10 years. :p (kidding)

actually that is pretty close to true... its just for some reason the local insurance agents are morons that dont realize that.

True, dat. However, I'd really rather stay w/ the corrupt guberment monopoly than the horrible gong show private insurance like they have in AB and ON. I quite like not having to remortgage my house every time I insure the car.

You have to stand your ground sometimes, when told "I cannot help you".
You ask for someone else who can help me.
That seems to have worked for me the 1/2 dozen times I have used that, but you have to know that I am "obdurate", a very useful thing to be!

I agree. Most of the time, if you are polite but persistent, you will get SOME sort of results or action that you're looking for. Can't help? Thanks for trying. Bring on the person who can, because somebody can.

Used to trying to make deadlines and constantly having to wait for other people. After a while, you get tired of waiting for people who can't/won't help you. A lot of people merely get paid to occupy space. They can't help us. The people who oversee them? They usually can.
