Winnipeg once again has been selected as one of the best places in Canada to live.

MoneySense magazine rates Winnipeg #9 in its annual Best Places to Live survey.

However, Winnipeg fell one spot from the 2009 ranking of 8th place.

The new survey is good news for Brandon, which jumped from its 2009 ranking of #10, over Winnipeg, and to a new spot of #7.

The magazine lists Ottawa, which had been ranked as #2 in 2009, as the best place to live this year.

Last year’s #1, Victoria, fell all the way to #8 for 2010.

The magazine should be available now on newsstands. The magazine says a web version will be posted May 3.

There is a lot of positive news out there about our fair burgh. Despite the prophecies of doom and gloom - the negativism, we've more reason to celebrate Winnipeg these days than we've had in many a year.

Yet the Free Press elects to post this headline: "Winnipeg drops spot in best-city survey".

Will we ever find a way to look at the bright side in Winnipeg?

Not while the NDP are in power.

I assume they ranked 10 cities and Brandon used to be worst. Now which city is even worse than #9?

No, they ranked dozens and dozens. Not sure of the exact number. I think I heard Toronto came in in the 80's and Vancouver was 29th?

I had no idea Canada had 179 cities, and some of these places I have never heard of. Interesting that they did not include any population or population density numbers in the ranking. The contrasts are interesting: highest average household income 170,000 in Wood Buffalo (how many people in the household they don't say) vs. 49,000 in Hawkesbury (lots of single people I think). Average house prices range from 762,000 in Vancouver to affordable 99,000 in Portage (yay). 239 days per year below 0 in Thompson vs. 31 days in Powell River. 4 of these cities don't have a hospital, 99 don't have a University ...

I find it hard to believe Thompson has 239 days below zero...

That's a weighted factor. Not the actual number of days...

The Roots suck!

This is the 9th best city in Canada to say that.

I think the raw data shows actual number of days.

Best go back and look again. Halifax has 1452 days of precipitation if your theory is correct...

And Winnipeg apparently has 192 days below zero. That is over 6 months of below zero days. I can assure you that is not the case...

Precipitation is generally measured in mm and not in days.

Mid-October through mid-March sounds reasonable for below 0, throw in the odd September and April frost and it adds up quickly. I don't think that they only counted days that were 24h below 0 but when the minimum temp. was below 0 - even just for 10 minutes (freezing day). Some of these stats are also here:

When I read the report (http://list.moneysense.ca/rankings/best-places-to-live/2010/weather/Default.aspx?sc1=5&d1=d&sp2=1&eh=ch), i see 179 days < 0 for Thompson, 148 for Winnipeg.

Those are not days, those are the rankings out of 179, most of the tables just show rankings.

Have you actually lived in Winnipeg?

Help me understand the logic. Winnipeg temperature averages 6 months where the temperature dips below zero?

Maybe it's just me and my damn selective memory...

Maybe you live here for so long that you don't register cold anymore. It is not the average temperature, they were counting the number of days when there was an instance below freezing, for example two days ago at night it went down to -2, so that day would have counted even though the day temperature was around 20. If they count the number of days where it is at or lower than 0 each year, then on average there are more than six months where that happens. This would include November through March where it's below 0 pretty much each day, and a few nights in October and April (in my limited recollection).

shite there have been some years that we hit negative temps every single month of the year.
