Interesting name for a development...Cimarron.

I wonder if the derivation of the name was known?

cimarrĂ³n
Spanish word for "maroon" (fugitive or wild one). It refers to the Africans (and others) who escaped slavery from the plantations and mines of the European colonizers between the 16th and 19th centuries and developed independent communities in the wilderness.

Have you never been to Calgary Dean?

I actually like the common names in communities. At least you know which community someone lives in when you know their address is 123 Cimmaron St/Way/Heights/Lane/Cres/Bay/Place etc.

As opposed to here where you pretty much have to memorize every street name in the city to know which area it is in.

Ummm, you're kidding right? At least you're consistent...

Heh heh if you think adding "Transcona" to every street name in Transcona will help you navigate through this impossible to navigate city knock yourself out...

You don't see the absurdity in this?

i guess I could knock on every 123 Cimmaron until I find the right one. Hell who knows maybe I will get lucky and find a desperate housewife. At least I have a legitimate excuse for knocking on the wrong doors.

I am under the assumption that the numbering would be unique throughout the development. Sputnik, can you confirm that they don't use the same numbers on a Way as they do a Bay?

This isn't about making navigation easier, but rather easier to recognize what area a street is located in and if anything it debunks the idea that having non-unique names makes navigation difficult.

If you are going to have to look at a map anyway, what difference does it make if all of the streets in a community have the same "first name"?

Take Calgary for example. 123 Prestwick Heights SE tells me a few things. The street is located in the area of Prestwick and that area is in the SE quadrant of the city. Sure I have to look at a map to find "Heights" but it's not really that bad.

In Winnipeg you get an address like 123 Blueberry Bay. Where is that? Who knows? There is absolutely zero logic in street naming in Winnipeg everything is random and makes getting around for newcomers and tourists pretty challenging.

They use the same numbers throughout. There will be a 123 Cimmaron Way and a 123 Cimmaron Lane.

However, it is just accepted that the suffixes (way, bay, lane, heights etc) are an important part of the address.

The SE, SW, etc thing in Calgary is great, as long as you realize it and get that part right. The link is for Okotoks which is not part of Calgary. Are there areas within Calgary that do the same stupid thing?

Jesus, you're really grasping at straws in your belittle Winnipeg at every turn campaign.

Isn't making it "easier to recognize what area a street is located in" by definition making navigation easier?

Let's use Transcona as an example. There must be hundreds of roads in Transcona. If everyone of them was called Transcona (Ave., Way, Street...) what do they do when they run out of suffixes? And at what point does it become more tedious looking for "street" and "way"?

What happens when a street runs through several communities? Does it change because it is easier?

I think you're having fun with us sputnik. No one would think that street naming convention was a smart move.

This just allows you to continue your "Winnipeg is backwards" sniping. You need to stop picking at the scab you think is Winnipeg.

Try building up the city for a change. This constant Winnipeg belittling must grow tiresome even for you.

meh.. I can see how when all the city is, is a buch of bedroom communities hobled together by developers, how it would make sense. But its still a ridiculous idea for any normal city.

sort of a different take on the whole point douglas proposed name change that was put forward here in da peg.

There's no way Transcona has more than 50 streets and avenues!

As with any place, there is a learning curve involved in orienting oneself to the roads.

There really is not much difference either way - you still need to remember a house number (possibly a suite number also), a community name (Transcona/Cinmarron) and a localizer (Kildare/Place). Only diff is the Okotoks way puts the community name where Winnipeg put the localizer, and Winnipeg the road type is descriptive, rather than a distinguishing part of the name taxonomy.
