8am - 3pm on a weekday?

Could they possibly make it any more inconvenient?

Hey, I donate platelets. You think that's inconvenient, you should see the schedule for platelet donations! Very Happy

8-3....good thing nobody works in this city or we'd all have a hard time getting there!

I donate platelets, so yeah, scheduling is....awesome! lol

Honestly, I've had this conversion with staff, why do they have such crappy hours? No one could give me a decent answer. They're always asking for donations, yet the hours are totally...uh, what's the word....somebody else help me here: _________

I go on the weekends...at least that way I don't have to worry about jerk bosses being pissed off that a donation took too long (as if I have ANY control over much of what goes on a Canadian Blood Services)

GO DONATE BLOOD THIS FRIDAY! Icon_mad

[end rant]

I feel better now....

Maybe a little bloodletting.... ahh...yeah, that's the stuff. GO DONATE BLOOD THIS FRIDAY! Icon_lol

I have not been pleased with the blood donation clinics since they moved the main location to such a totally and completely out of the way insane place.

8-3 is pretty reasonable as a time for a one time clinic. But the regular clinic especially since its in such a crappy location needs to have ALOT better hours.

They freakin close at noon on Friday!

WTF!

Don't government employees get time off for blood donations?

Check with your manager for your company.

My company -- large private firm -- used to give us time off to donate. Probably still do, but I went on my own time last month because we stopped getting the shuttle. Not enough interest anymore.

The one thing I find frustrating is that if you have a platelet donation scheduled they tell you that time is when they want you in the chair, which means getting there 1/2 hour early to go through screening, etc.

However, if you have a donation scheduled for 8am, you're not getting into the chair until 8:30, because none of the screening nurses will turn their computers on before 8am.

LOL!

They use a centrifuge - pump your blood out, spin the platelets out and then pump it back in. Takes 60-90 minutes.

Weirdest thing - I can say I know what a heroin addict feels like. When they run the first cycle, they pump plasma into you to keep your fluid level constant. The plasma is at room temperature, which is cooler than body temperature. So when that gets pumped back into you it feels like someone is pouring cold water over your arm, even though it's just one needle going into your vein. Strange.

So I can experience being a heroin junkie by getting room temperature plasma injected into my veins?

Well, not all the experiences of being a heroin junkie.

Isn't it heroin that is often portrayed as people thinking they have bugs under their skin?

It's a surreal feeling to be sure.

hehehe little tiny tweezers. lmao GO DONATE BLOOD THIS FRIDAY! Icon_exclaim

The part I don't like the most (other than the huge needle sticking out of your arm - the platelet needle is bigger than your standard donation needle-) is the pressure of the fluid being pumped back into your system...I can feel it pulsing in my tong!

And yeah, when you start to get the room temperature plasma returning, you can tell almost instantly...feels like the temperature in the room dropped by 10 degrees all of a sudden!
