I have discovered a couple sources for very good Dim Sum that can be prepared right in your own home (not home made...). Anyone else tried home prepared Dim Sum?

I've never actually had dim sum in my life? What is in it?

If it's already prepared, heating or reheating dim sum should involve very little effort at home! You need a steamer, an oven, and a frying pan and you're good to go!

Yes, this is already prepared. Get it at the Chinese supermarket on King. Safeway also has some nice pork dumplings and a very tasty shrimp dumpling.

Sticky rice. Pork dumplings. Shrimp dumplings. Shark fin.

I steam it from frozen and it is delish!

Nah, it's called shark fin because it looks like a shark's fin. It is a shrimp filled dish covered in a pastry-like wrap.

Do they have any "fins" that are filled with other foods that aren't seafood? Not a big fan of................ if not, I'm sure there can be substitutes for that.

Pork dumplings.

Not a seafood fan eh? Too bad. Shrimp is a tasty treat.

Yeah, there is something about the texture that rubs my gag reflexes the wrong way. Quite embarrassing when you are in public. Fish, however, is the only kind of "seafood" I can eat, and love it.

Haven't been for dim sum in years. It was a favourite when I used to spend time in Calgary. The food was great, even though you weren't sure what you were eating, but the atmosphere has a lot to do with the experience. The guys trolling around with the carts, it was just plain fun.

I too love dim sum but rarely eat it anymore. I find Kum Koon quite pricey....I would rather go out for dinner to a nice restaurant.

I had dim sum today with the BF and it was fantastic being that it was at Kum Koon and they had prepared some special snacks in honour of the Chinese New Year. It is not that expensive to eat there. Best deal in town though is at Dim Sum Garden, two to five pm, Dim Sum Happy Hour.

I should add, I think the steam cart service is part of the experience, which is not easily reproduced at home.

Plus they have some dishes at Dim Sum Garden that I've not been able to replicate at home: a couple of the shrimp dishes and that chicken skewer thingy.
