I was thinking about attending Alycias Christmas eve dinner on January 6th. I am not Ukrainian so I am not familiar with traditional x-mas eve dishes. Does anyone celebrate Ukrainian x-mas? If so what are some traditional dishes?

China is a great dish. Ceramic? I've seen wooden dishes. Clay?

Christmas eve is all meatless I believe. Dishes like meatless Borscht, Cabbage rolls, potato pancakes and I really like those little buns with sauerkraut inside.

I'm a 1/4 Ukrainian but sadly my Ukrainian Grandma died when I was pretty young and no one in my family carried on the tradition, so I don't remember much. I'm sure there is someone else on here who is better qualified to answer.

meatless everything is tradition, few follow that other then those who truly follow the faith though
but given that it is not at a "home" hard to say how close the traditions will be kept.. this wiki link actually sums it up quite well

http://orthodoxwiki.org/Holy_Supper

funny how a "restraunt" could host a supper of this sort since one of the key parts is an extra place at the table always being kept and that NOBODY regardless of who they are can be turned away from partaking in supper (for free). Hitler, Stalin, Harper, Iggie, heck even Layton or some Quebecer could knock on my door and I would NOT be able to turn them away.

Meatless isn't all that bad. I have been enjoying Lentil & bean burgers from SuperStore, man are they ever tasty.

I can not turn you away, but I am not certain I will be home that day I might try to get to my parents. Although to be fair I dont go meatless anymore.
A couple of other things that link does not mention

Straw is supposed to be kept under the table. ( I would suspect that City Health codes do not allows Alycia's to do this)
The first spoon of Kutya is supposed to be thrown at the ceiling.
NOTHING can be put away. The table must remain set with leftovers and dirty plates and everything all night.
The candle lit for supper can NEVER be extinguished. It must go out on its own. ( which can lead to all sorts of possible fun.... see below where the candle is to be placed)

my supper (if I do supper this year) will consist of

Kutya
soup(if I have time to throw one together) if not then a simple tossed salad
buns/bread thingy (cant remember what its called but its a buns shaped into a circular bread loaf that holds the candle)
beet pickles
dill pickles
some sort of cooked veggie...probably dill carrots
bothwell cheddar, mild
perogies
cabbage rolls,
mashed potatoes
turkey
with probably poppyseed cake as dessert.

it can be good, if done right with enough time, i just rarely have that kind of time though.

ooo One thing I forgot. supper is served when the first star becomes visible. ( or when it should be visible since we live in a city and seeing the first star is rare at times )

Best place in the city for purchased Ukrainian food.

And the recommendation is not just from me...it's been "approved" by my Ukrainian wife and mother-in-law.

If i remember correctly...is it kutya that's the grain in honey? supposed to be good luck?

Or is it something else I'm thinking of.

Anyway...we were having a Ukrainian Christmas Party a few years ago...traditional across the board. My wife & mother-in-law were making EVERYTHING by hand...except this wheat & honey thing...cause it's quite time-consuming and tricky.

So we called all the Ukrainian food places we could find...and Sevalas was the ONLY place in the city who even heard of it...let alone made it. When I went to get it (cause I know little about the faire)...I noted other things they had and grabbed a menu.

Since then...we've been back several times when we're feeling like Ukrainian food...and too lazy to whip up fresh perogies.

If you time it right on the visit...you'll see the 1/2 dozen or so babas in the back room pinching perogies and rolling dough.

Casha? Not sure of the spelling.

edit: btw, Buckwheat is high in potassium and phosphorus and contains twice as much vitamin B as wheat, buckwheat is the best source of biological protein among edible plants, having more than 90 percent of the protein value of nonfat milk solids and over 80 percent of whole egg solids. It is low in calories also. Just say'n.
