Germany celebrates day Berlin Wall collapsed

BERLIN - With prayers, music and pomp, Germany on Monday remembered the 20th anniversary of the day the Berlin Wall fell, sending East Germans flooding west and setting in motion events that soon led to the country's reunification.

Chancellor Angela Merkel - reunited Germany's first leader to grow up in the communist east - started the day with President Horst Koehler and other leaders at a prayer service at a former East Berlin church that was a rallying point for opposition activists in 1989.

"We remember the tears of joy, the faces of delight, the liberation," Lutheran Bishop Wolfgang Huber told the congregation at the Gethsemane Church.

East Germany's fortified border crumbled on the evening of Nov. 9, 1989 after 28 years holding in the country's citizens - a pivotal moment in the collapse of communism in Europe that followed a confused announcement by a senior official.

At the end of a plodding news conference, Politburo spokesman Guenter Schabowski offhandedly said East Germany was lifting restrictions on travel across its border with West Germany.

Pressed on when the regulation would take effect, he looked down at his notes and stammered: "As far as I know, this enters into force ... this is immediately, without delay."

Schabowski has said he didn't know that the change wasn't supposed to be announced until the following morning.

East Berliners streamed toward border crossings. Facing huge crowds and lacking instructions, border guards opened the gates - and the wall was on its way into history.

I can't believe it's been 20 years already. I can still remember the fall of the Berlin Wall. I was in junior high school. Oh how time flies!

As someone who grew up through the Cold War, it was certainly an incredibly significant event. During my time in the military, we spent a great deal of time and effort preparing to fight World War III in North West Europe. That all changed when the wall came down. I think that point is missed by a lot of younger people who either didn't live through that era, or haven't been taught about it.

Indeed. Living with the threat of a nuclear war was not a pleasant thing.

I remember seeing videos and photos of the devastation in Japan and thinking these fcuken people want me to be safe hiding under a desk??

Whereas by time my generation was briefed on how to survive they quite clearly indicated the rate of survival circles. As well as the different types of massive explosions and what kind of devastation could be expected AND how thick walls needed to be to keep the radiation and the blast out.

AND how long you would need to remain in isolation before you could be expected to reasonably survive the contaminated air and water.

I remember being told to hide under the classroom desk! Pretty good advise, very similar to wash your hands and you will live forever!

You were told that if you washed your hands that you'd live forever? Were you in a special class?

I was there when that happened, at CFB Baden-Sollengen. I had arranged to take the train to Berlin when I was advised such a visit to the eastern bloc would screw up my security clearance (oops). The wall coming down soon let to the closure of the base.

Peter Mansbridge was on the plane on the way home.

No CFB Baden-Sollengen. We weren't allowed to travel to West Berlin even.

Everyone was pretty serious about security and spies during the cold war, even at the end.

I remember as a youngster reading articles about escaping over the wall to West Berlin, fascinating stuff to read, but how unnecessary it all was. Deutschland uber alles!!
