Jonathan, a young man travels back to the Ukraine to see where he roots are and to hopefully meet a woman who saved his grandfather from the Nazis in WWII.
His guides end up being Alex (played superbly by Eugene Hutz, lead singer of gypsy punkers Gogol Bordello) and Alex's grandfather as the driver. And Sammy Davis, Jr., Jr., the grandfather's seeing eye dog.
Alex speaks almost Borat-like and provides much comic relief with his broken English. Things become more sombre and poignant as the film progresses.
This is the first directing job by Liev Schriber (Sabre Tooth, in the Wolverine movie, among other things.) Jonathan is played in a most understated way by Elijah Wood, star of Lord of the Rings.
If you enjoys films like The Station Agent, Garden State and The Visitor (nomimated for an Oscar last year), you might enjoy this one. I did.
