Love to read more BS about government regulations dictating to citizens what we can and can not do. It is BS, If i grow potatoes I will sell them who ever I want.

If I had a factory that made chairs, I would close the doors if government regulations told me I can only sell my chairs to Walmart. If the western values won WW2 and the Cold war, then why are we slowly becomming more and more socialist and communist?

If this pisses you off so much, can you imagine how some americans feel with the very rapid switch to socialism in their country? Gonna be another civil war down there me thinks

Actually LD...we're kind of becoming the opposite.

See...if we were socialist/communist...the government would be stepping in saying "hey you big guys, leave the little guy alone...in fact...give them some of your product to sell so everyone is equal.

But no...this is purely about money, and the big retail/wholesale companies are seeing less big competition, and are now paying the government to go after their little competitors. I don't mean by paying them envelopes of money...but by threatening the government with legal action, for all the rules they have to jump through to be in business, but the little guy doesn't.

The way I'm seeing it, It is only a matter of time before Government steps in and takes over the peak of the market and make it into another Crown Corp like MPI and Hydro. Government knows best.

I think the real reason that Larry doesn't want anybody selling directly is because then we'd see that we can actually produce some good stuff here...as opposed to the crap that is sold under their label presently.

We'll want the good stuff that is being withheld from us and used for export purposes only. That's my take anyway.

Is that actually true? Because I've heard that elsewhere too.

if the potatoes say No 1 on the bag.. then they are the best, supposedly.

however, the best potatoes I have ever tasted on Yukon Golds, brought in from PEI by this one church group who sells them as a fundraiser.

apparently Peak of the Market refuses to allow that type to be grown here. ( or more likely simply restricts them being sold)

We have a Wheat Board, a Milk Producers Board, why not a Potato Board. If the NDP had their way, there would be a Department of Food and they would control groceries. Peak of the market apparently owns the rights to sell all potatoes grown in MB 970993

actually that would be the liberals.. specifically Kevin Lameroux who says that the government should ensure groceries sell for the same price everywhere in the province.

Yeah, that's a tough one to pull off with needing to transport things far north. Shipping costs money, that's how it is.

Kevin's point is that the government manages it for alcohol so it should for food (specifically milk)

I guess what he is forgetting is that they can do it for alcohol because they MAKE AN INSANE AMOUNT OF MONEY OFF OF ALCOHOL and can afford to cover some costs. Shite if they sold milk for the same price as whiskey they could easily do that to.. Not sure how many people would appreciate paying $100 for a 4 litre of milk so that people up north dont have to pay $12 for a 4 litre.

What a bunch of horse excrement, and I know that for a fact. My brother works for Southern Potato near Winkler MB, they have over 4000 acres in spuds.......and guess what?? Peak Of The Market is not even one of their customers, they have contracts with Old Dutch Foods, Hostess Foods and Naleway Products. Another Producer, Suderman Bros. Farms sells 60% of their potatos to McCains. POM does not have the monopoly on potatos, good grief.

On last night's CTV news a farmer was near tears after receiving a letter advising him he could no longer sell his potatoes at farmers markets. If he did he faced a fine. He was scrapping his yield.

The premise of the story went something like this: at one time farms of "X" acres were allowed to sell they product independently. Over "X" and they had to sell to/through (?) the marketing board.

Apparently that changed. Now everything must be sold to/through (?) the marketing board.

There maybe exceptions for commercial sales such as the ones eastsider mentioned...Old Dutch, Hostess, etc.

Nothing to fun about, had a soccer game in winkler last month, and there seems to be a lot of South Americans around, Columbians, I think, get the connection. Might be ore than potatoes. Peak of the market apparently owns the rights to sell all potatoes grown in MB Icon_smile

Freeman, I know exactly what you saw, and sorry to disappoint you but the connection is potatos! Peak of the market apparently owns the rights to sell all potatoes grown in MB Icon_smile Every harvest season Kroeker Potato Farms charters a couple of buses and heads down south to Mexico to round up field laborers for the harvest. Its dirty, heavy grunt work that most of us shy away from. I wasn't sure if this practise was still going on but I'm guessing it is if you saw what you saw.
