According to the CBC:The National news program last night...Jack Layton is proposing the NDP change their name to just The Democratic Party.

Apparently they no longer feel they are "new" thinkers...just more of the same old politics.

That...and by becoming "Democrats"...they can kiss Obama's butt even more...and maybe get him to run for Prime Minister when he's done as President Wink.

But seriously, does the Video Professor think that changing the name will have an impact on the voting public? Will everyone suddenly realize, "My God, there is an actual Democratic party, which supports democracy, not like those other commie bastards that are fascist dictatorships" and then everyone will suddenly vote for him?
sarcasm end

Displaced Person.....that came from the flood of refugees following the collapse of the Nazi empire...eventually the initials DP took on a negative connotation

"DP" means lots of things...depending on the context.

could be "displaced person", "disabled person", "double-penetration"

LOTS of connotations...read into it what your mind creates Wink.

Don't look at me dude.....I gave the historically-correct meaning of the two letters. Personally, I have always referred to them as the NEW DUNCE PARTY.

The real funny thing is that the NDP are farther away from Democracy then any of our main parties.

Lofty ideals aside, there is just as much backroom machinations and power-grabs with them as with any other party.....with them however it becomes more insidious due to the holier than thou attitude that some of them espouse.

NDP puts name to vote

By PETER ZIMONJIC, NATIONAL BUREAU For the first time since its founding in 1961 there is a serious possibility the New Democratic Party could change its name.

Karl Belanger, spokesman for NDP Leader Jack Layton, said while there has been talk of a name change in the past this is the first time a resolution will make it onto the floor of a convention for a vote.

It will happen tomorrow morning when the NDP's 1,300 delegates will be asked to vote on kicking off national consultations on a name change. If adopted, it will result in a number of cross-country meetings for name suggestions that will be voted on at the NDP's next convention in 2011.
While much has been made about dropping the "New" to simply
The Democratic Party
other suggestions being discussed by delegates include:
Social Democratic Party

Democratic Party of Canada

United Democratic Party
Labour Party of Canada

Canadian Democratic Party
and
National Democratic Party

Catherine Cote, a political scientist at the University of Ottawa, said a name change could work for the party but it would also be a challenge for the NDP, which is referred to by its acronym more than the other parties.

Looks like the NDPer's didn't even get to vote on it. It was just a gimmick to attract media attention to their convention, it's an old trick.

Did the job eh? I'm actually disappointed. I'd would have LOVED the Labour Party of Canada handle... Let's use it anyway.

Why not Communist Party. It is the most suitable name. Did you see Layton's rant on the evils of free markets? What an a-hole.

DP (Democractic Party) would be PD in quebec. Which sounds like 'pede', french slang for pederasts.
