Thought I would post this because it was a cool idea.
Might be a cool thing to do for the upcoming BBQ.

Intimate House Music

Yesterday I had a crazy idea, and I wondered if you'd like to be involved. I started thinking…I would REALLY love for people to get to know my solo acoustic music. There are a lot of good people in Manitoba, and I'm sure they would enjoy the music if they actually heard it. I know it's true. I got all fired up…

My music is a trip down my memory lane, playing music that's affected me from the age of 15 to now, with originals from each period thrown in. Originals run between pop and country/folk. Perfect for a night in with a few friends over to enjoy it with or a night out at the lake where you invite all the neighbours to come on by.

I had this idea of setting up a "House Concert Tour", exclusively in Manitoba. The idea was that I would perform house concerts all over Manitoba during the month of August, 2009 while the weather is so perfect. Call it The "Queen Victoria's a Folkie" Tour. Friends and music fans like yourself would host a concert in your home…a simple concert. Each host would invite 15, 20, 35 friends/family to their home or cottage, and I would come over and play.

The event wouldn't need to be fancy, just a comfortable place for people to relax, and a space to stand and play sing my heart out introducing my music to new people. We might have a little food, we'd gather in your coziest room, and we'd create some musical magic, with you and your friends. We'd set out a basket for a suggested donation ($10-15 you choose), and we'd sell a few CD's. People would leave glad they came, having a great experience.

What do you think? Would you be interested in hosting one of these concerts? Sometime during August 2009 or another time. Pick at date, we'll see if it works. Concerts could be any day of the week (early evening or afternoons, whatever works best for you). I know house concerts happen all the time. It's not that unusual. I LOVE doing them and it is a great way for me to grow my audience, meet new people, hear interesting stories, build community, and bring music into your home.

People say all the time, "it's hard to get audiences to go out for live music". I say, let me bring the music to you! Why travel to Alberta, Toronto, or BC, to perform when millions of people right here in Manitoba still haven't heard our music?

So, would you like to be a host? If so, I will help with any details or questions. If you've never hosted a house concert, please visit: http://concertsinyourhome.combeahostintro.html for a short video introduction to hosting house concerts. I will help in any way I can and together we will make it a great night!

Karol Thorsteinsson

If you're interested/willing please fill out the super short form below, and I will be in touch shortly to work out the details.
Thanks so much!

I've been to a few house concerts. Normally pretty good if the person's house is arranged to suit it.

Home concerts are fun. I had Jet Set Satellite play a full power set in my family room for 90 people. That was nuts!

Dean -

The type of stuff I do as a solo acoustic act is a mix of pop/light rock/country. Some non-standard singer-songwriter stuff, and some covers from ~1991 to now, with my own take on them.

If you've ever seen one of the VH1 "Storytellers" shows, I try to get something like that going in my solo performances.

With the band I'm in, One Blue Door, We can most accurately be described as "Prairie Rock". That includes the pop, rock, and roots genres, with a bit of country thrown in. We're definitely a little different from most of the bands I've seen in the city.

Thanks for the question!

Karol Thor.

So what you are saying is that say... if I was making a porno movie... I could hire you to make an original sound track?

hehehe....

but seriously...estimate on cost and availability for August Long weekend.....

Well, I haven't done any porno music lately, but I could give it a shot.. lol!

Unfortunately, August Long Weekend (Assuming you mean the 31/1/2/3), I am booked, as I'm going to be playing in Stoughton with the band(House Concert FTW!)

My/Our availability in August is pretty open though. There is a tentative booking for the 15th of August, and the 29/30 is the MS Ride, so I may not be able to do anything, but toss me a date, and I'll see what I can do!

As far as cost, like the letter above says, usually, I ask that the host put out a bowl, with a suggested donation of anywhere from $5 to $15, whatever you're comfortable with.

Thanks again, Dean!

I agree, it took me a short while to figure out the "for the Win" meaning. There's also the beautiful FTW FTW configuration, which takes both into account.
