wow...6 year 7.2 % raise. ( only 1.2% per year basically)... but to get that.. they need to work an extra 30 minutes every day,
lose 1 week per year of pay
not get overtime pay on the first 30 minutes of overtime
changes to their pensions.

man.... I dunno about that... that's some tough turkey to swallow. Basically they end up working more, for less.

BUT if the paper does shut down if the option is not taken...its not like their is a ton of newspaper jobs out there. Some tough decisions to be made for sure.

Hate to say it but they should be grateful that they have jobs in a medium that is undergoing radical shifts quickly.....the same thing happened in the stock photography business - the power of the net.....many of us saw it coming and shifted our money making endeavours to other areas. What is happening in print media was inevitable. Sink or swim time.

By law, you're not entitled to the overtime rate (time and a half) until you work more than 8 hours a day, so this is probably a perk in the current contract that they're trying to eliminate.

Seems that a lot of union jobs are under pressure these days, North West Glass in Wpg shut down while their employees were organizing. Maybe its time for unions to smell the coffee.

yeah most provinces have the exact provision in their employment legislation that allows organized groups to play fast and loose with the employment laws.

WOW!!!

I think that's the first time I've seen you use the word "LOOSE" and actually mean "LOOSE" and not "LOSE".

So congratulations.

1.2% per year and working an extra 30 minutes a day is pretty harsh. Depending on how the economy bounces back after the recession that could be well below keeping up with inflation. But the Globe must be in real trouble these days so it's not too surprising they put together a contract like that.

and actually take a 1 week per year pay cut or about 1.9%..

very hard contract for anyone to swallow.

Yeah, that would be hard to vote in favor of.

Propose a 3 year deal so you can re-negotiate when advertising revenues have come back up. Print media will still be in trouble at that point but right now it's the hit on print media plus the economy.
I just read some more articles on it. The 'final' offer is saying this is the only thing they'll do before the contract expires. So if they reject it there's just a strike/lockout. The globe isn't going out of business if they reject it. No way this is getting passed.

It could be nothing more than a bargaining ploy no? Maybe in the end this will be a good thing for all businesses. I think maybe union contracts were getting out of control.

Perhaps it is time to get back to a little reality.

Could be a long strike at the Globe. Union negotiators are advising to vote for a strike. Not surprising considering the contract.

Do the union negotiators who are advising to vote for a strike go on strike as well and have no income during the duration of the strike?

Even offering a 1 or two year contract and that would be swallowable I would think... but 6 years?

umcrouc0

Right now a 6 year contract is pretty nuts.
Union workers get paid during a strike. It's only a percentage of their wage (maybe 60 or something) but money collected from union dues is pooled so in the event of a strike they are in a position to hold out long enough to negotiate a better agreement. If they didn't have that sort of progam they couldn't effectively strike. My guess is negotiators are professionals paid by the larger union.

I'd jump at the chance to work 30 minutes more per day for a 1.2% percent raise each year for 6 years. Plus an extra week vacation? sweet! (Unpaid presumably, but whatever).
