similar to the one in alberta and saskatchewan they say.

They also say 13000 direct and indirect jobs will be lost if the pork industry collapses.

Anyone want to remind me why these guys want to expand again? They have been "losing" money on each pig sold for the last 3 years and now its even worse.

Are we going to have another "bail out the farmer" events like we did with the BSE scare a few years ago.....everyone lining up to buy pork out of the back of a truck...

....so if the bailout request is denied...anyone want to take bets on how long before the next hog barn burns to the ground?

Maybe some conditions attached to any bailout would be a good idea....they haven't given any indication as to what pro-active steps they can take as a industry (such as reducing the overall population, so as to be better able to support what they currently have) to assist themselves, so the taxpayer isn't throwing good after bad (as usually asked to do)

see thats the part I dont get, last year this time they were offered a good chunk of money to slaughter, seems not many took advantage of that.

on an interesting note. USA is reducing their milk cow population by 107000 animals in order to raise the price of milk, part of that agreement is that they wont add back to their herds.

They are attempting to double the price of milk ( and dont worry double for them does not mean double for you)

I don't buy my milk in the U.S. so I'm not that terribly concerned about the price of my milk. Smile ...however, I do think that sounds like a reasonable idea considering the circumstances these particular industries find themselves in.

I don't get the pork industry. They keep switching from saying they can't have a moratorium because they need to keep expanding, they saying they need to cull hogs to increase prices. After the moratorim was introduced there was this big outcry that it would hurt the industry. Then last year the government paid hog farmers $50 million to kill their sows because there was too much supply. But the fight against the moratorium kept going. Don't get how that makes any sense. Now they're asking for a bailout again and want a worldwide cull to increase prices. Will this be followed up with another call to get rid of the moratorium so they can increase production? Looks like the anti-Bill 17 website has been shut down so maybe they'll stick with the story that there's no market for the next little while.

Maybe that's why they made the Porky Pig Swine Flu...
Only it backfired and became an all-out influenza...

Simple. They aren't in power and they want to keep rural voters on their side.
Where's the stuff on the moratorium?

Ahh, there it is. Skimmed throught article the first time around. Amazing how that's still an issue. My guess is they saw it as a good way to bash the NDP so it was included in the list. Otherwise it would just say 'the hog moratorium' not 'the NDP's hog moratorium'.
