Never pay a ransom...ever.

I've thought about that many times since I had my daughter...and you hear of abductions and ransoms.

I'd still say no. I'd lead on that I am...try to gather information about who is behind it...and then hunt them down and kill them all....which is what should be happening with this one.

Again, why should government be pressured. This young lady made a conscious choice to go to Somalia. She was not forced. Foreign Affairs currently recommends to "avoid travel" to this country, but I can't see when this was issued, but its safe to assume that it has been in place for some time. She decided not to take heed of this warning, so why should government be put in a position of paying a ransom?

Great point Freeman.
The other thing to consider...is that if a ransom is paid...now the kidnappers have reason to kidnap someone else to get more money...possibly someone with more influence/contacts...or a group of people.

No...NEVER pay a ransom, as painful as it may be to know you'll lose someone...the best thing to do is get as much information as possible to find out who is behind the kidnapping...and then terminate them so it doesn't happen to anyone else.

There are people available to do "extractions" afterall. Pay them instead of the kidnappers I say.

Pretend to pay the ransom, tell them you're paying the ransom, prepare the ransom and prove that you have it, but never pay the ransom. Use the payment as a way to hunt them down and wipe them out.

Hey...I know...write them a cheque for $1 more than the ransom..and then demand a refund of the $1 or you'll cancel the cheque Wink.

Supposedly it works for traffic fines...and we know what kind of extortionists the government is Smile.

If I can take this thread aside for a moment...

Why would the government refund the $1 before cashing the cheque?

The scheme I have heard is that if you send a cheque for $2 more than the fine, then they have to send a refund cheque for that $2. Hold on to that cheque - don't cash it. The case file remains open until it is cashed, and they won't assess demerits until the cheque is cashed.
So, to avoid demerits and the associated increase in fees, try this method.

Back to the topic at hand.....

No, don't pay a ransom. Send in the special forces.

Won't they send the cheque back if it is made out incorrectly and if time has run out, you're screwed as it's up to you to pay it on time.

If it is the good looking white chick- definitely YES
