I don't know if this was covered, but I have maintained for a long time that low voter turnout is a silent protest to some regard.
I have given up on the 'system'. I do not see a party that represents my interests (naked water polo is my top priority). Where I live, there was NO point in voting, other than the cast a vote against Toews. He won with a sizable majority.
I am, though, interested in pursuing proportional representation. Is there a movement underway for this?
So, I chose not to vote. Meaning to many that I need to keep my fat face shut. But I won't. more than 50% chose not to vote. That speaks volumes. Forcing people to vote is not the answer, but what is?
Any views on this? Bring it...onnnn!

Isn't the Green Party pursuing proportional representation?

I'm sure they are.... like any political party that cannot manage to get a seat BECAUSE of our broke @ss system. If they were the majority, they would not want it. It needs to be a grassroots movement started by Dean. Everything needs to go through Dean first, hee hee.
I admit, I really did not follow our election. I was bored silly. The U.S. one is terribly interesting to me and extremely significant to all of us. Ours was like a do-over resulting in little change. Rex Murphy had a good commentary on it.
I was a member of the Green Party, but not any more.

So, if this affects all parties, why not pursue it? Probably because it does not benefit the party in power?

no I think it is more because how would we actually decide who was voted in?

If I was running as an independant would I be running acorss the country? Or are only parties allowed under this?

For example. The Green party.
One would think that being the leader EliMay would be one of the first in her party to get a seat if they get enough votes acrosss the country, however... anyone with a reasonably working brain can easily see that she should actually be one of the last pepole in her party to get a seat.

Voting like the suggested way only ensures that you vote for parties, not ideas, not people, not anything other then parties and to me that is completely undemocratic. So undemocratic one has to wonder how the green party can say they are the only party that supports democracy and yet they support this hellish idea of voting people in.

I don't think the Green Party lost because of our system.

They lost because they have a dumbass leading it and are still perceived as only a place to park a protest vote. There's not much difference between the NDP and the Greens in this manner.

There's nothing wrong with our system. It's just that loser EliMay that can't win and wants to change the rules to allow her an unfair advantage in Parliament.

I missed Jimmy's crazed opnions, haha. I would say the Greens were pretty close to the Libs this time around.... Actually, the Liberals probably had a more agressive, mind you, stupid, enviro-plan.

Regardless, the system we have benefits the east more than the west. Quebec and Ontario pretty much decide our gov't. I guess it you prefer to be coddled and have the 'grown ups' in the east look after you, you are fine. Me, I would actually like appropriate representation.

Oh, and I think the Green's lost because people can only focus on one issue at a time. This is why McCain will become President. Remember when he put his campaign on hold because of the economy? Barack was wrong about multitasking. People cannot do it. We were focused on the environment, benefitting the Greens, but then the focus switched to the economy and suddenly people forgot we even have an evino-thingy.....

The Conservatives are peoples choice for a fiscally responsible gov't, not the Greens. The Liberals are fools and should not have mentioned carbon-taxes, credits or whatever the heck they call them.

The election was won because of the economy mostly and that the Conservatives have not been given enough rope to do something VERY stupid. Sadly, as a nation of people, we are easily distracted and can only focus on one big issue at a time.

Harper lost a majority by being a dumbass and overworking the criminal justice thingy and cutting art funding. That blew it for him in Quebec.....and he really didn't have to bring those things up in the first place.

...and yes, I called Harper a dumbass. Shows ya, even the smartest guy can be stupid sometimes. (...and people wonder why he likes to keep a lid on his people..)Smile

Ya got it back-asswards J2F. The Quebec loss-of-votes issue was a lack of focus on justice. Justice was surprisingly low-key by everyone this time.

Harper is really not out of touch with the arts funding most people are getting tired of paying for Picnic Tables and Dead Rabbits from trees .

He didn't have to bring up the YJA in the way he did. The Conservatives own the Law & Order issue anyway, so that didn't do anything but piss-off possible soft votes in leftish Quebec.

Quebecers are genetically predisposed to Federal handouts, so mentioning the artists the way he did was only going to hurt him...he didn't have to harden his vote as it was there anyway.

So, those were two calls that he made that were very costly and stopped him in Quebec. I figure if he had taken his own advice and shut tf up'd, he'd have gotten a majority.

So you have no problem with the constant handouts to Quebec but not to us for a Museum um . Anything to put Stephy boy in power right . I find that odd when you rile against goverment spending on so many things. But to get them in okay

Huh?

I'm especially pissed about any money going to Quebec Jim. I'm a separatist. I want them out of our country.

If you think I'm only against waste when it isn't in our area, you'd be very, very wrong.

Glad to hear it but I still support thr CMHR but yes it could be somewhat scaled back or built over more time , but then it might never get finshed like the perimeter.

We got a highway to build.
Then, when we finish all the cloverleaf's, we'll have all the "rights" we want.

Low voter turn out is a slap in the face of all those who gave their lives for this country and a slap in the face to all our forefathers who built our great country.

There is no excuse.

I've never voted in a federal election and can't remember the last time I voted in a provincial one either.

However saying that's a slap in the face of all those who gave their lives for this country is complete horseshit. Canada hasn't been invaded since the War of 1812.
