There was a traffic accident Friday morning around 3am. One vehicle involved. The road was closed for several hours, opening in the "early afternoon".

This was all northbound lanes of Pembina Highway between Dalhousie and Bison drives during morning rush hour.

How in the name of god can anyone justify closing down that stretch of road for that length of time? This was a single car collision! With no serious injuries?

We need to develop a protocol that mandates the roads be cleared and opened withing a MUCH SHORTER time frame.

The injuries were life threatening, I believe...

Two occupants of the SUV, a 39-year-old man and 25-year-old woman, were rushed to hospital, where they were being treated for serious but non-life threatening injuries yesterday, police said.

Let's assume the injuries were life threatening. I'll be the injured were removed from the site shortly after emergency crews showed up. They then kept the road closed at least another 9 hours...

This make sense?

GOM, I believe I saw something on the evening news about this crash. Apparently there were a lot of beer cans etc. strewn about the crash site, I'm sure the reason the road was closed so long had to do with the crash scene investigation. I'm assuming it took a great deal of time to catalog all the items that were found. The forensics team probably had to be woken up, arrive at the scene etc. Given the severity of the crash and the quantity of alcoholic beverage evidence they probably wanted to make sure they had overwhelming evidence to prosicute. This could have been much, much worse had other vehicles or pedistrians been involved. Hopefully these people get nailed to the wall.

Although I will admit 9 hours does seem on the excessive side but I've never been a police officer so I have no idea how long these things take.

9 hours just doesn't seem reasonable imo.

Hell, I could have done a friggn' painting of the scene in that time.

I do understand the notion of evidence collecting but with the technology available today, HD video for example, it does not seem reasonable to shut down the highway for 9 hours.

This being Winnipeg it should take no more than an hour for Winnipeg CSI to show up. Mind you if they had to load up the Hummer it may have taken a couple minutes longer. They mark/tag and photograph a couple dozen beer cans in another hour - even at 4am.

Then they can go for coffee for an hour as they must be exhausted by now. Okay, it's 6am. Sun is up. Start video-graphing Pembina Highway from the perimeter to confusion corner. Both sides. Now it's 8am. What to do? What to do?

Oh sh1t. Forgot to measure the skid marks. There goes another half hour. Sweep up the debris? Another half hour. Maybe put down some gas and oil soaking stuff. Sweep that up. Another half hour.

Course none of this is done simultaneously. Afterall there is only one Paramedic/CSI/Sweeper available at 3am...

Damn it, forgot to call the tow truck. With this weather it'll take FOREVER to clear the mess. Ah, that explains it.

yeah 9 hours is a little wacked. and totally unreasonable... how many lanes on the other side of the road? 4?? how hard to set up a couple of cones, signs and cops and get traffic flowing properly/
